That is a tough situation. It doesn’t hurt to explore other work options. You might find something else that is a better fit.
So is mine. There was loads of hard cider, beer and wine at their holiday party with very little consideration of sober options. And a fall party was on the theme of Oktoberfest with lots of different fancy beer.
If I was in your situation I know I wouldn't make it in that environment. I would talk to my boss and let them know I'm uncomfortable. It all depends on your relationship with management and your comfortability. You could also review your resume and look on indeed / zip recruiter for similar positions in another organization.
Keg at work?! Crazy
Anyway, is there someone else in your life that you can "pawn" this off on? In other words, like "oh, Cindy and I are doing this major system overhaul / cleansing thing" or "tom and I have a bet going to see who can go the longest wo a drink " or "my partner and I are not going to drink or eat red meat until Easter" or whatever.
Do what you gotta do. It’s your sobriety, no one else’s.
I did steer clear of alcohol in my first year of sobriety and then had some support friends who knew my situation.
Today, I work around alcohol a lot now. Each of my locations have bars, I do my business and drink soda. No issues with it.
That’s very encouraging to hear, thanks for sharing
Gotta make it work, might have to use gym and health as a reason. People unfortunately can never mind there own business and want an explanation.
Keep your work fridge or a small fridge in your office stocked with seltzer or whatever non alcoholic beverage you drink. Also, I'm also in MA!!
You can play it as a risk, and protect yourself by looking for other work, or embrace it and offer to be the company designated driver and help your friend and coworkers get home safe every day. I have done the DD gig for my company and employees. It can be a real challenge schlepping a carload of drunk friends home, but it's also very good reinforcement that I never want to go back to that kind of life. Just one of many alternatives to giving up a job you enjoy.
