Higher Power?

Roman, I would suggest reading page 46 of the Big Book of AA. Middle paragraph. I states that we only need a willingness.
For me, like others here, I simply took the suggestions and trusted the process of the steps. What I found was that my life changed. I couldn’t stop drinking before and if I did I was miserable. Working the steps was different. The realization of a HP working in my life came slowly to me. The simple fact that I wasn’t drinking and wasn’t miserable was proof.
Get a sponsor and work the steps. Hope that helps.

Thanks Matt!

I don’t define it, but most of the time I call it God. I also find that as I check in with God throughout my day, God takes different forms. Which I suppose is the nature of a higher power, that it is undefinable/indescribable, and ever changing.

It was a bit difficult for me to conceptualize a higher power and how that applies to my life. When I began working the steps i came to an understanding that I have never had the power within myself alone to sustain sobriety. Only a power greater than myself was able to do that. Whatever higher power that is I trust in it, more than I trust in myself.

I actually became homeless due to my disease and ended up staying at The Salvation Army. My first Sunday there they did services and I went to church for the first time since my 20's. I had a spiritual awakening that day without even knowing I would get sober 7 months later. I did step 3 without ever being in an AA meeting. My higher power has a plan for me and I just have to make sure I'm paying attention and just riding the ride.

Thanks Andy, and nice work on starting sober! I'm working at it too.

I struggled with this at first too. Then I just stopped worrying about it. I don't believe. In any omnipresent being that diddles in my life when he feels like it. The people I know in AA and their experiences are what helps me. My sponsor. I can call them up when I need to talk. I hang with them at meetings and other outings. It's simple as that and there is no supernatural magic to agonize over. I don't have to make excuses when the "magic" fails me, and I get a solid "you're welcome" when I thank the group for helping me.

This works for me, and I don't need to question it.
