Yes I grew up Catholic I’m not a religious person but I do highly believe in God. I think many use religion as a guide to a better life I’m which it is. And they thank God for this guide basically the Bible. Many people when trying to get sober have no idea how to act or do once sober. The world is different some feel lost. And once your sober you want to do what’s right what feels right and many turn to God or the Bible. It’s guide to how to live a good life and be good to your self and everyone else. If you believe in God remember God is good. Don’t take it as if Christianity is being pushed on you. How ever you see God or what ever you believe in. His the same only one. And if you don’t believe you can still use it as a guide to be a better person

Aa is spiritual what you believe.any beliefs.aa is around the world. It does not have to be god.
Tbh when i went to AA meetings it was intimidating with that aspect of a higher power or spirituality. I am religious tho, grew up catholic and im not very religious but i do pray. I think one of the biggest reasons the spirituality aspect is involved is that from what i know of how i was taught is that when things are really hard and you dont know where to go you can turn to God and there is peace and comfort in that. As addicts i think we go through periods of lonliness and we experience emotions/events that are so heavy it can be hard to do it by ourselves at times, and it can be dangerous and unfair to put so much onto just one person. Support is great and important in recovery. However there is an aspect in which even if someone isnt religious, we must relinquish our need or desire for total control. Thats why in my personal thoughts people who are religious can turn their heavyness and troubles to God and give them the things it is hard to carry. In terms of not being religious, I think its important in the mindset to let go of that heaviness and just " throw it out" from yourself. Not onto others in dependency, or all on yourself because it is unhealthy and unfair. Idk if that helps or is too much, but i do think its possible to recover without religion in the equation.

Hi Shay, I recently made it to 3 years sober. I went to AA for the year, did the steps, and tried my hardest to keep an open mind. I’m just not a religious person. Logic and evidence always get in the way… I tried to find a home group that didn’t push a monotheistic agenda. I couldn’t find one. Instead I found a therapist that specializes in addiction. He taught me that I didn’t need a higher power other then my own will power. Taking that first sip of alcohol or drug is always a personal decision. Once that first sip/hit has been taken all bets are off. Personal accountability to never take that first sip/hit has kept me sober. That and the love I have for my 10 year old daughter is stronger than the temptation of a temporary high. If you can afford a therapist that specializes in addiction recovery, I highly recommend seeking one out.

Thank you Chris. Congrats on 3 years being sober. My daughters are my reason as well.
I’ve been speaking with my therapist on a weekly basis and know first hand how helpful he’s been. I really needed to hear this perspective. I do feel that AA has so much merit and am most certainly getting open to it but the value I find in my therapist is immeasurable. My fear however is that I don’t have any support system that is sober. I immerse myself with my daughters however my personal emotional needs never are met.

Being spiritual , doesn't mean you are religious. For me , I needed to believe in something... Anything greater than myself. Because the best I could do wasn't good enough
Finding a higher power means a power greater then yourself. Like the people in the rooms of na and aa for example could be your higher power. That something special happens whenever we gather as a whole. That's what I feel my higher power is. Because I have problems with religion as well. I don't believe in the whole Christianity thing I believe there is something bigger then us out there that controls the cosmos. And every little thing in it. It might not be human or mammal or anything that we could ever dream up. It's something we can't comprehend so that's where I leave it. So when it comes to a higher power for na aa. I picked something more obtainable that I feel everytime I'm in a meeting. The power of the group. Just try a couple meetings don't even think about the spiritual thought and just concentrate on the message and what's being shared and if itd still not for you we'll then st leastyou tried
