I don’t think it’s anyone’s business. When I’m offered a drink, I told them that I get really sick after drinking now even if it’s a little bit.
Rachel, good topic. I respectfully disagree with the majority here. The 11th and 12th traditions give clear direction on this. A simple “no”to tasting drinks is sufficient.
Where I run into trouble is with my ego if I go into the “why”. Am I explaining why to let people know how much good progress I’ve made? How far I’ve come? The work I do with others? Basically, am I sticking my chest out just a bit? These are important questions I ask myself. As an alcoholic my ego has to be smashed. I’m very cautious about feeding it in any way. What’s my motive? If I’m carrying the message then ok. If not, I should pause.
12th tradition says “Spiritual substance of anonymity is sacrifice. Subordinating personal aims to the common good is the essence of all 12 traditions”. Remember it’s attraction rather than promotion. If I put myself out there as one in recovery, and drink again, I may diminish AA in the public eye.
I’ve always been open and honest about my issues as well. To each their own, but it helps me hold myself accountable.
Wow Matt
You said it better than I ever could have.
I told everybody I was in recovery I was so proud of myself and I wanted all the parts in the back it wasn't for a few years after my sponsor took me through the traditions that I realized what an ego stroke it was and the damage I could possibly be doing to alcoholics anonymous.
The greater good
Thank you so much for that Matt!

It's your LIFE we are talking about. It's perfectly reasonable to guard it.
I just would’ve say no, and left it at that! Because it’s really not anyone business!
