What do you guys do for screaming anxiety?

These are some really great responses on the topic and a hugely important one- vast majority of alcoholics drink to self medicate through anxiety and depression, which in turn just gets worse. Anxiety and depression are tough to treat medically because what works for one person doesn't workfor someone else. Find w

Gratitude first thing in the morning has helped me tremendously. I make a list and share it with people and sometimes they send me one back. It’s given me a new perspective on bad days to see the positive even when stuff sucks. Glad you shared with us about it.

I practice being present today. That’s an over simplified answer but it’s right on point and it’s the type of things that most of us agree on in recovery. My mind will start drifting to the past or to the future and my anxiety will start coming up when it happens. So I stop what I’m doing with my mind and I pointed in another direction that is here and now.

I understand that this is a skill that takes practice. I’ve been practicing for a very long time and I have other sources that have helped me such as Buddhist philosophy and western psychology. I’m willing to do what it takes and sometimes for me it takes resources that are not going to be found in my recovery programs, so I go find them.

In order to be free from things, like anxiety, disciplining, ļæ¼ our mind is foremost, and that discipline will not come without dedicated daily practice.

This is why it’s so important to go through healthy Behavioral routines even if you don’t feel it in your heart, or can’t understand it or don’t see a dramatic change after a few days: building new patterns that have discipline, so that your mind guys what you wanted to because you’ve practiced how to do that.

Do you remember when you were learning to walk? Many of us do not. However, you did learn to walk, eventually no matter how difficult it was, did you not?

Overcoming anxiety is a similar process of learning skills and unlearning old behavior by using behavioral modification techniques like repetition of healthy behavior .

Think about it until you understand what you have to do and then stop thinking about it and get to work, and I guarantee that you will build skill from your devotion to learning new behaviors that will allow you to start coping with your anxiety, so that it is no longer in control.

Anxiety is a strange thing. Monday morning is tough for me also, but has lessened steadily with sobriety. That said, taking care of the pets, staying busy, exercising, meditating, doing for other are all things that help me. Hang in there. Not sure of your poison, but not drinking helped me more than anything else. Yea, holidays are tough.

This honesty will go along way. This too will pass. It does get better. Be apart of the no matter what club. Don’t pick up a drink no matter what happens. It’s better to deal with life clear headed and able to rationalize that life is difficult but if you let God carry a lot of the burden then you will see the improvement in how you deal with things and live life with more purpose. When you do the next right thing it does pay off. It’s hard to describe but the big book does describe it I the 9th step promises. You’ll be amazed even before you are half way through. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply Grant. Getting my mind under control is something I've struggled with my entire life. I was a quiet nervous child who survived childhood molestation. Therapy has helped a lot. I've got to remain in the here n now, not looking back nor forward

Boom! Retake the power of your life that alcohol has robbed you of. You can do it. No matter what! Stay away from that first sucker drink. You can do it.
