1 yr "celebration"

My 1 yr is coming up and my mother and sister are insisting on a special celebration and family activity.

I want nothing of the sort and still have huge self worth issues.

Is there a polite way to be firm about my feelings?

Should I just let them have the party for the sake of their own wants or needs to celebrate?

Am I just being ridiculous?

Please share some thoughts...

Sincerely,
Undeserving in NJ

Hey Zach, first congrats on 1 year. I felt the same way at one year… the guilt of the past out weighted the feeling of accomplishment. I’m about to celebrate 3 years, and I’m definitely celebrating. Amends have been made and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.
In my opinion, you should definitely let your family celebrate. Look at it as a celebration of their freedom from your addiction… if you’re anything like me, you probably put your mom and sister through heII and back while you were in active addiction. Let them celebrate a victory after the many years of feeling like they were in a losing battle, and humbly acknowledge the strength it took you to get to this point. Best of luck in the future, and never forget how lucky you are to have the support of those two women.

Thanks Chris,
Feels better knowing I'm not the only one that has felt this way. I still have 19 days left hopefully I make it there and I can enjoy their happiness.

Hear hear, Chris! Well said.

Zach, don't give up. Keep fighting.

Congratulations on the year. My advice is to remember the man we see in the mirror is not the one everyone else sees. We see the flaws are persistent, they see the flaws are improving. Let them celebrate the Zach they see. Try to see their view of you for that day. It helps your self worth, and helps them feel like they were supportive. I hate having the attention on me, so I get how you feel. I jokingly tell people that I didn't do anything and if someone says differently its a dirty lie, but when I am given the spotlight I graciously give my thanks. The sooner it is over the sooner I can hide in a corner again.

Do it! Celebrate! He11 yeah!

Thanks for advice Steve I feel like my voice is in your words

If I must Shawn O !

Don’t argue young man.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: When’s your day? Did you ask your mom and sister for a cake? Enjoy it bud. It’s worth a big celebration.

I hadnt asked for anything except to not make a huge deal of things at the time of the original post.
I have since embraced the celebration and have plans to bake a cake with the 2 of them.
My date is 1/28/21
