12-Steps

Hello everyone! I’ve been sober for almost 3 years now. Unfortunate life events have kept me motivated on remaining sober for this time. However, I still don’t feel entirely fulfilled in my sobriety. I have not worked the 12-steps and I believe that might be a big missing piece to this puzzle.

My question is: How do you start these 12-steps? Do you have to be part of AA?

Thank you for the feedback.

It is easier to go to meetings or a sober clubhouse near you, and get involved. Talk to some of the guys and ask someone to sponsor you. Sponsors are guides to help you work the steps. You have 3 years and that’s amazing you did it on your own. Great job. There is no fast or hard rule you NEED to be a part of AA, but seeing as that’s where the most step work is done it is in my opinion the best bet.

I suggest going to a few different AA meetings and feeling it out. It’s a great way to make other sober connections, which has been one of the best parts of my sobriety. And like Tim said, you could do the steps on your own, but some things would make a lot more sense and be more meaningful with someone with who has been through the steps.

90 meetings in 90 days…in a row.

Most of my “how it works” questions were answered in that time.

Applying it and living it never ends for me.

Thank you Rachel, James, and Tim!

I would not have understood how to work the steps without a sponsor and meetings. And I continue to work, learn and grow in my program constantly.

I’ve heard of success with the steps without meetings and sponsorship, but more times than not, when I hear people say “AA is not for me” it’s from people who do not fully give themselves to the program.

Yeah man, get to some AA meetings. Look up secular meetings in your area unless you go hard for god. The secular meetings focus on sobriety only and are super helpful. Either way, get to meetings, introduce yourself, and go from there.
