2 months after escaping an abusive relationship I picked up boxing, November 29th, 2022. It started as me wanting to break outside my comfort zone and do something new, now it’s a hobby I’m extremely passionate about. November 29th, 2023 I’ve had and won my 4th match. I’m proud of myself, because not only have I honoured commitments made to myself; to be more intentional, but it’s helped me stay consistent. Today also makes a year since I started learning Spanish on Duolingo and I’m just as happy as about that. 2023’s been a long and great year for me despite few tribulations, but with 2024 being a month away, I’m already excited for what the new year holds.
Thats awesome! I've thought about taking up a boxing class...I have so much anger built up inside and lots of abuse as well.
Plus I'm trying to be healthier. Your an inspiration and badass! I Aldo downloaded Duolingo....but putting it off.
May I ask if you've ever done a sport like this before? Did it feel uncomfortable at first? And advice? Thanks
Thank you so much, I really do appreciate this! While I’ve heard boxing is an amazing outlet to blow off steam, I also think it’s a great sport to take up whether you’re looking to try something new or simply learn self defence. It definitely has health benefits, too!
For me as someone with chronic health issues, a part of the reason I took up boxing was because 2022 showed me I didn’t know how to protect myself. The amount of times I was robbed, attacked, physically and sexually assaulted is disturbing, and being defenceless made me feel no better. Additionally, half of my health complications came from a poor diet and lack of exercise. Since I started bodybuilding and boxing I’ve physically felt so much better than I have in a while and I’m grateful. It’s also thanks to cutting back on drinking soda, eliminating alcohol from my diet, staying hydrated and disciplining myself to make healthier food choices.
Now regarding the process of becoming a boxer, despite investing in the sport for a little over 1 year, I’m still a beginner. It was uncomfortable at first because I was afraid of being “bad” but the coaches at my gym are very supportive. They were kind and patient with me, even providing additional accommodation for my processing disorder and physical disabilities. I definitely encourage you to box if it’s something you’ve been thinking about, especially if it’s to feel healthier. But I also encourage you to do research beforehand. I found my gym by Googling locations near me. I read the reviews and called a few spots. The gym that stuck out to me was the one I visited and spoke with agents about getting a membership (which can be pricey if you’re like me in a high tax state, but they often have deals to accommodate or just let you come in whenever, really depends on the place).
Overall, it’s okay to be “bad” at things; nobody starts perfect. If you pursue boxing, don’t worry about “getting it right”, focus on having fun and taking something good away from the experience. I’ve been boxing for a year but I’m still working on my form, hooks and footing, and that’s okay. Even if it’s something you can’t see yourself pursuing in the long run at least you can say you did it at some point. If you’re also like me and have physical disabilities (some invisible; I have arthritis in both my knees for example), definitely be mindful of your body and how it feels. Boxing requires a LOT of stamina and endurance, but it’s become somewhat easier for me because I bodybuild beforehand.
That’s incredible!
Thank you so much! I appreciate this so much more than you know!
