A day of mixed emotions

I hit 90 days clean today - by far the longest period of sobriety in my life. I’ve never felt happier, more clear-minded, more productive and more optimistic about the future.

Then I got a phone call from a friend I was in rehab with. She told me another girl that was in the program with us died last night. 22 years old. Didn’t know her that well but it was clear she was really struggling to stay clean and didn’t seem to know which way to go in life.

I’ve become grateful for many things during these past 90 days but the one thing I often overlook is being grateful for simply being alive. There was a time I didn’t care if I lived or died. That’s what addiction does. But as bad as things get, there’s no coming back once you’re gone. It saddens me to see somebody I knew never get the chance to overcome their pain and find happiness in life.

There are so many people still suffering. Today, I’ll honor her memory and give thanks that I’m still here with 90 days clean and, hopefully, many more days clean to come.

I felt the I didn’t care if I lived at points that’s when it scared me. So many pleasures and beauty that life offers us. We are blind when we’re intoxicated. It’s amazing how much more I see now!! Thank you for sharing!
