Truly struggling. I was put in a position that brought up the exact feelings that I was trying to numb when I started using all those years ago. Obviously I have so much to work through still but this situation is tough because it’s a family member and I don’t know how to keep boundaries up without causing chaos within the family. I thought after a year and a half of sobriety and working on myself it’d get easier but honestly, it feels worse. I haven’t been triggered so strong to get high like this since I got sober.
Hi Amanda, boundaries can be tough with family. My advice comes from personal experience as I have navigated sobriety in the past 3 1/2 years, honor yourself first. Do whatever you have to do to stay sober, everything else comes secondary to that. Once you have that figured out maybe you can have a conversation with that person and outline clear boundaries with the person, but for now, take care of yourself. I have a nonexsistent relationship with my brother due to the way he treats me, both of my parents have pressured me to forgive and forget, but I need to protect myself first, I won’t do anything that puts my emotional sobriety on the line. Good luck with it all and send me a message if you want to chat more!
This does sound like a tuff test, but you are ready for this Amanda. Not sure what advice I or anyone else can give you. You have already taken the he first big step. You are reaching out for support!! It may not sound like much, but it’s huge that you are mindful of the situation and your feelings. You recognize the threat it is to your sobriety, and your taking action. That being said, my advice is that you continue to put yourself and your sobriety first. I’m not sure what that entails in your current situation, but if you can muster the strength and use your recovery tools (prayer, meditation, meetings, sponsor, friends, exercise, read, etc), this too shall pass. We are all in your corner. We are stronger together! You don’t have to be alone. Wishing you a peaceful and sober resolution to your problems
