Advice for early days?

Only a few days clean and finding that my brain really wants to justify using again, like 'all this sobriety work is just not worth the effort' and 'why continue to torture myself when (blah blah blah)'.

I know I usually feel better on the other side of the wave, but would love to hear if anyone has a go-to self reminders during the tough moments.

Thankful for any advice tbh :pray:t2:

I agree with Luis! Also playing the tape back the reasons why you want to stop. I know my brain liked to lie to me and I had to shut it up! If I was at home I would go for a walk or bike ride or a task around the house.

Basically if you can find it possible to look at drugs and alcohol as an allergy. Then you can start the healing process. Since it is a disease of the mind we are addicts far before we pick up a substance, we just use the substances to fill that hole inside of us. That’s where meetings sponsorship and the fellowship come in to take that place of the substance and to connect you on a spiritual level to a higher power. Keep searching for the solution and you will find it.

Your brain is trying to kill you. You’re doing just fine, but it always helps me to remember that my thinking and current brain is how I got here. So I’m just going to let others think for me. Sponser, the big book, meetings and other AA’s. Hope to hear more of your story soon!

Yeah, definitely get a sober support system. You don't have to do this alone.

Remember your why!! Why you want to change. And remember how shitty you feel the morning after. Both physically and emotionally.

It might be difficult but just think about all the difficulties using brought upon us… you can do it and it does get easier as time goes on

This reframing is definitely giving my brain something to chew on: addiction is a disease present in the mind before using substances. Super powerful, thanks Fidel :pray:t2:

Hi!
How is your day going, Court?

In the early days, I took things, everything/moment by moment.

People kept saying,
One day at a time.

I was telling myself…
Ten minutes at a time!

I also reminded myself of the deep disgust I felt towards my own self…the last time I relapsed ( over two years ago ).

…( continued )…
I also read up on the science behind cravings, I viewed-listened to podcasts, followed online folks who have had long-term sobriety.
I will share names of folks that have helped…

Rich Roll

  • his podcast rocks!!

  • Laura McKowen
    Her writing helps, has helped.

Tired of Thinking About Drinking
I have more to share.

I have yet to eat this morning, so going to go and do that…take care and I am rooting for you, Court!

Not much will make sense coming from your brain in the first month or so of being sober. After years of messing with the ability to think and reason, our brains are suddenly set free and don't know what to come up with. What I was told in early sobriety was to pretty much go with the assumption that my first thought is wrong for a while🤔

Love these suggestions, thank you for sharing your experiences and what helped. 10 minutes at a time is nice :crossed_fingers:t2::pray:t2:

You are welcome, Court!

When I am back at home, I will share more!
Yes.
I was sincerely taking things moment by moment.
I still am in many ways.

I drank due to anxiety…and I still have loads of anxiety…while I will not drink ( or use, if applicable )-with you, y’all today.

I will check in later to see how you are doing, Court!

Oh!
Another resource:
Annie Grace,
This Naked Mind.

I also read up on the science behind cravings.

They supposedly (?) last for around 15 minutes-something like that…

They truly are like waves.
So, sincerely…remain sober for ah, “ waves “ at a time…boiling it down to a few seconds if necessary.
I had to do that.
A full 24 hours was too much for me, in the beginning-especially!

Ah, I mentioned the craving stuff twice.
See?
Even just now…my mind is racing, all over the place.

Sometimes I engage in guided meditations and breathing techniques - in order to get outta lizard brain mode and calm the eff down!
