I’m very new here and still new to sobriety.
I keep seeing people on this app refer to themselves and the people on this site as broken or sick or damaged. And it breaks my heart for people to feel that way.
But are there folks on here that don’t feel broken? I quit drinking because it was so bad for me and I was drinking way too much by anybody’s standards. It is difficult at times but I don’t feel broken. My overwhelming feeling is one of liberation and excitement about my future. Sure, cravings suck and seeing the people I love pull away is very hard but the feeling of optimism outweighs the negatives.
Am I alone?
Absolutely not alone!! I don’t think we have to focus constantly on the “broken addict” it’s a terribly tape to play yourself. We have to be our own advocate sometimes and that begins with self talk and not beating ourself down for mistakes and trying to somehow “fix” everything from our past. I feel it keeps us down and in shame.
Agreed! I talk to myself like I talk to my best friend. Supportive, forgiving, honest.
Many of us are emotional fractured by addiction, or have destroyed so much in addiction we see our life as broken. The purpose of recovery is to repair ourselves. The catch there is if you mend a broken vase it is still broken. It has been made whole again but the breaks are still visible. That is why we refer to ourselves as broken. Few of us will ever see ourselves without the breaks of our past.
Thank you for sharing that. I understand the terrible things addiction can do to a person and everyone around them. I get why people may refer to themselves as broken because that is their truth. I just find it off-putting when people refer to all of us as broken.
There’s a pretty good mix of on here. Some days the gratitude posts outweigh the struggling posts. In the end I think there’s a good balance of people crying out for help, and members stepping up to relate to them, support them, and trying to give them hope
Unfortunately. I’ve noticed allot of post are from new people or people struggling. Those with some sobriety and gratitude and recovery are in the messages below the post. That is where I go and look for the hope.. or I’ve been told. If I didn’t like what I was seeing. What an I doing to change and shape it in a more passive direction. Everyone has there own process, like there own fingerprint. Sometimes you meet someone where they are at to lift them up
I have spent a lifetime in negative self talk. It's a tough thing to overcome. I'm better with it some days over others. It takes practice to be kind to yourself. I've done some bad things but I'm not a bad guy! Gratitude helps, when I look at what's good in my life, that usually helps. Thanks for your words!
That’s good to know! Thank you!
You are right. The comments are often very supportive and loving.
That’s awesome
That you recognize that you speak negatively to yourself and work to fix it! It is definitely something I had to learn as well!
But if there pulling away because your sober do they really love you?
Yes, some of them do. They all drink a bunch so I think they feel threatened by what looks like me switching teams.
It’s still very new for everyone.
Good morning
sunshine! I love your attitude! I also share your positive outlook. Although some days it breaks my heart to hear the struggle of what alot of people are going through? I feel so grateful when I can help someone with their pain? It reminds of how blessed I am. Freedom of addiction is truly a blessing. Useing that blessing is a miracle!
You are not alone, yes there are a lot of newcomers here. I am enjoying my newfound freedom
We do recover. If you need someone message me.Im a good listener.
Thank you! I agree. It is so difficult to see people struggle.
Awesome, thank you!
I was a loser not handling the realities and disappointments of modernity very well before I ever took a drink, and I am after.
You are never alone people in recovery AA or NA home groups will love you till you can love yourself and then you will feel at home and learn the tools to take it one day at a time.
Just know you are not alone . We are all here for the same reasons or very similar
