Am I an addict because I don't want to be

Am I an addict because I don't want to be anymore.

When can I say, I'm a recovered addict? When will I be free?

Ive asked myself that same question. Is a recovered alcoholic someone who can now drink every now and then like a "normal" person? Or are u recovered if you never drink again, but that means your addiction is still controlling your life in a way. Not sure theres really a straight answer.

You are free today. You choose not to let your addiction destroy your life. Wake up and do the same thing tomorrow.

God is willing to do for you what you can not for yourself. Give him your anxiety, your fear, your doubts and your pain and he will give you freedom like nothing this earth can provide!

This is exactly what I am thinking. I stopped using, I don't want to use. I occasionally want to drink but know it won't be what I hope it'd be. So I just don't. I just want to be normal. Just not use and stop with the groups.

I'm sick of going to A.A. and every conversation being about recovery. Why can't I just go to a casino and make friends and have laughs like a normal person

What says you can’t? The strength is within. You know the deal. You don’t want to use, or drink. People who would call your friends would recognize, and respect that. My entire friend group drinks. No one has asked me to join them. I also know that the addict in me is MY issue. No one else’s. As long as I am honest with myself, and know when to walk or take a step back, I can go camping, fishing, to a party, golfing, the casino… and I get to make sure everyone gets home safe because I am 100% sober!

As an alcoholic, I used to think about this. But then a good friend got cancer, went through chemo & radiation to battle his illness & he is a shell of the person he used to be.
Another friend goes to dialysis 2x weekly. He will do that the rest of his life. These situations gave me perspective of where I am at and what I have to do to keep the life I have.
I can do anything, as long as I don't pick up a drink & work on my recovery. That seems like a pretty good situation. I know my two friends would trade places with me in a heartbeat.
