So last night I attended an event for work. This is your normal drunk fest of politicians. Full disclosure, I am not a politician but I do work in the political arena. I sat there in conversation about legislation coming up in this next legislative session when a long time politician whom I now have tremendous respect for sat down and changed the entire conversation. First words out of his mouth were how can you do this. I thought he was discussing my position on legislation and I started to reply when he said no dumbass how can you sit there around all these booze and not drink a drop. I explained it’s not my thing anymore but that it’s not easy. We discussed how he wants to stop drinking but wasn’t sure if he could do it. Long story short, 3 hours later he still had not had a drink. I grabbed him a water and we continued to chat about the disease we both have. Two hours more of conversation he realized he had not had a beer and only had water for over 5 hours. He was shocked, I said to him you made it this long, can you make it to 6 tomorrow night. He accepted my challenge and as of this post he is holding up his end of the deal. At 6 I am bringing him with me to AA. I remember my first 24 hours, it was tough. This guy is on a mission to change his life. I was just happy to have been at the right place to start that conversation. I am excited for him and pray he is able to reach his goal. He accomplished a lot drunk, now imagine what he can do sober.

Teach him the tricks of always keeping a NA beverage in his hand and not letting him get blocked in at an event, he’ll need those for sure.

This is an amazing story. Thanks so much for sharing. What is also amazing is that you can work around politicians and be sober. I can barely watch politics on the news in fear of my sobriety and I'm not entirely kidding.
