An Old Fashion Love Affair:

We come to be in relationship with our Drug Of Choice.

We spend time together, we throw money at it, we told ourselves it would always be there for us.
We placed our relationship with it above all others.
We told ourselves we would never have to break up.

These behaviors, over time created a bond. But when our love digs in its claws, when we come to realize they couldn’t deliver on the promises of peace and joy, we accept the inevitable… we have to break up.

…And so we grieve.

But we also heal..

At a certain point in early recovery we romanticize the past and contemplate turning back to use,
Or we relapse.

If even subconsciously, we come to realize that if we take one more step into recovery, we close the door on that relationship. So not only was our love wrong for neglecting to deliver on a lifetime of joy, we were wrong for thinking it could.

Early recovery is the funeral.
Sustained recovery starts when we put that relationship into the ground and the ghosts that came with it.

Rest In Peace.
