Depending on several factors… I had terrible panic attacks for the first few months after getting sober. It was the past creeping back up to the surface, along with all the memories of the nasty person I was. Once I had worked the steps, and got real with myself the fear and anxiety started to subside. It can get better.

Hilda, Listen to me for you are right that you are feeling like when you go to the store that feeling of being confined is jail until we face this fear anyway let ourselves go free.

Hilda hang in there, you know you better than anyone. I know meetings can help, working the steps helps. Going to church might help. As we draw closer to our higher power might help as long as our higher power is alive and we don’t have a door knob as our higher power because for sure it will turn on us. My higher power is God through Christ. Some of the most peaceful joyful times of my life was being in church hanging out with other Christian folk. Give it a try, let me know if I can help in any way.:pray::pray:

Not sure how long you’ve been sober but my experience has shown me that alcohol did help to mask my fear issues when I drank until the cure became the cancer. So you take it away and here are the same issues that were present the whole time without anything to help soften them. The 12 steps of recovery help a lot, talking to other sober people that experience the same thing helps. The big thing is to note most of us don’t have great skills at being able to deal with this type of real life realities so we have to find tools and work hard to put them to work in order to have peace. Hang in there your worth it

I’m still early in my recovery and this happens to me frequently (tho recently has gotten better). All of the feelings that I was hiding from through alcohol kind of came out at random times. I would cry over stuff that happened years ago that I didn’t even know was still bothering me. It’s all part of the healing process. As you learn new coping skills you’ll feel better, it just takes time and patience. Much love.

Hello Hilda: Do you have a “support group “?
Personally, I have a wonderful support group that helps me get through everything. I do go to meetings for support too. There are many resources online as well. I’m glad that you’re here and talking about what you’re going through. “This too shall pass.”

You are Spot On! Awesome advice I would say the same thing!
