The last few weeks while I’ve been getting sober, I’ve been staying with a friend & his family. They’ve let me crash on the couch, which has been so incredibly kind of them. I’ve made an effort to buy groceries & help with the chores, cooking, etc. That being said, it’s time for this baby bird to leave the nest, so to speak. I came back over to my previous roommate’s place tonight. It’s where all of my things are, so I came to start packing up, go through & downsize, etc. I’ve only been alone here for a few hours (she’s out of town for work) & my anxiety is through the roof. I think it’s a combination of a disruption in my routine, & the prospect of getting my own place for the first time in several years. I know I’m moving in the right direction, & I don’t have a desire to drink. I’m just feeling a lot of anxiety & fear. I’m trying to focus on how exciting it is that I’m touring a potential apartment tomorrow afternoon! Any words of support would be greatly appreciated!
These are all normal feelings. With anything new and unknown a bit of fear will be there, but I like the point that you are also excited! You should be, this is an awesome step forward. I believe in you and think you will do good! Just think of being able to relax and be comfortable in your own safe space!
You’re so right!
New place for a new sober life! Good for you!!
Yes like Tim says be excited.. also find rest in what's good also..
Totally normal! Even exiting stuff can cause some anxiety. Finding a new apartment is so exciting. I am doing the same thing at the moment.
Yep, as normal as it gets. What has helped me during this new journey (round 2) for me is accepting that feelings of anxiety, being overwhelmed, being flooded with emotions, etc. are all totally normal feelings and that I should address them head on.
Make sure to journal each day, view this as an awesome fresh start, and stop and take a deep breath with your eyes closed each time the feelings flood in. This is you conditioning your mind to relax in the face of pressure. Over time, your go to will become to breathe, quickly reassess, and keep pushing forward, you’ve got this!
I like how you said you are trying to focus on the excitement part of it instead of letting a potential negative train of thought bring you down. Every time you turn a negative into a positive you get stronger. Sometime those steps feel small and slow but they do all add up. Keep going and you will reap the rewards!
