Any 12 step people here that are not religious? If so, what/who is your “higher power”

That would be me. I stopped trying to define it. As much as would like to, I can’t really explain it. The good news is we don’t need to understand it. I came to believe that there are many powers that are higher than me. I rely on a lot of higher powers. My sponsor, my home group, my therapist, Mother Nature, etc…these are all powers greater than myself that I use to help me. I like to think that the universe provides me with all of this to help me be my best self. I use the word god from time to time, but for me it’s just a universal word I use to communicate a universal power or powers. Hope I didn’t confuse you. I just stopped trying to understand it all, because I’m truly not capable of “knowing” these things. I also have had to become tolerant of those that believe differently than me.

Spot on!

I am not a religious person, and I follow the 12 Steps

The difference is, religion is about following certain doctrines and practices and adhere to a certain and a specific God/ Higher Power/Supreme Being -
In AA or NA there's not a need to follow anything specific, merely a Higher Power greater than yourself, or God as you understand it -

A great way to try and get a better understanding of it all, is to find the book called "The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions " ( called also -the 12 & 12 ) and read Step 2

  • ALSO ,to get the book ,
    "Alcoholics Anonymous"

and read the chapter called , " We Agnostics "
