Maureen,, here

I have been working smart recovery! I love it! Not many meetings around my area though.

You have a month sober ? Something's working. I took advice from other recovering alcoholics : 90 meetings in 90 days - I could only do 89.
Get into service : I emptied ashtrays, made coffee, led meetings, participated in conferences, workshops, AA celebrations. I tried to do everything that was suggested because I was too afraid not to. I did not want to fail. I pray every morning asking God to help keep me sober just for today. At night I pray, thanking God for another sober day. I've been doing all these things for 32 years and still have not had a drink. You can do it ! One day at a time ! 30 days sober us awesome :hugs::heart::pray::latin_cross:

What are you doing to stay sober ?

Some people in AA suck. I affiliate with AA. When I can’t stand a group I find a new one. I also attend DAA.

How often that comes up!
A book called “Addictive Drinking “ was partly about that. I lean toward the anti-social anyway but won’t have AA take over my existence…

Same here .aa it work if you work it . 34 years.stay with the winners.

There’s some parts of AA that seem to be rooted in Christianity which are the punitive ones. Making amends to people and re living your mess ups and character flaws which I’ve done at nausium. But the rest is pretty stable stuff.

None of that works for me. It actually makes me want to go against the grain. I still haven't figured it out yet but I can go 4 months without drinking. Its the times that I do that are concerning. 110%...sucks

I’m not a fan of it either. I feel that instead of talking about solutions everyone just tells the same stories over and over.
I prefer research like books and workbooks that offer paths and solutions.
Currently I’m reading “Sober Identity” by Lisa Neumann and doing the Addiction Recovery Workbook.
I also attend The Phoenix classes and events.

I've heard a few people say that AA didn't work for them. I asked those same people if they tried working AA. I'm usually met with silence.

Don't listen to the haters, Maureen! AA isn't for everyone. I have tried working the NA program, and I found it more relatable and tolerable, but still ran into problems. But what really works for me is Refuge Recovery. It's a Recovery program based on Buddhist principles. But there are no RR meeting near where I live now, so I have decided to start my own meeting group when I complete treatment. SMART is also a great alternative, and they have online meetings every day if you don't find one near you. There are lots of us who don't need AA to stay clean and sober, and we are here to help.

There’s one thing about getting older—the ones who saw me at my worst are all dead now …

I went through IOP. It had an open platform for discussion. I liked that. It took a while to find that in AA but I did and go to all the meetings and is working for me. It doesn't much matter the program as long as you're comfortable participating in it.

Do what works for you. Nobody on here is an expert on you. I chose counseling and jesus

The books purpose is to find a Higher Power.
Trust God, Clean House, Help Others

Won’t work if you don’t work it.

No program is foul proof.

Of course nothing is fool proof. If you want sobriety tho, truly, then AA or NA are about as fool proof as you gonna get. No short cuts to staying sober for addicts. 24/7 jay oh bee.
