Anybody else struggle with friendships being sober?
I learned after I stopped drinking that I was the enabler. Everyone that I had drank with prior really cut back on their consumption once I had stopped. I didn’t realize any of that until nearly a year later bc I had cut myself away from everything to focus on sobriety. My drinking acquaintances were even supportive when they found out I had stopped. It’s definitely a lonely process but I’m sure you may have more support than you think😊 congrats to you for joining the journey!
Hi Ashley, to clarify, do you mean making friends or existing friends?
Getting sober is about making new friends and getting rid of those you used with you thought we’re friends. Takes work to make new ones. Give and take.
Yeah new friends. I’ve already separated a lot from the drinking friends.
Mmm, new friends were a little slow to come for me, but I also didn’t have to separate from most of my friends when I quit drinking because most were supportive. I have a ton of friends online now. And am actually meeting some people I met online in person this weekend. I have definitely become more selective of who I let into my life as I’ve remained sober.
Ya new sober friends is hard I'm kind of scared to try and go meet new sober friends in person so I started here
I do. I can't seem to make friends with any women at all no matter how hard I try. I talk to like 2 but they wouldn't consider me friends. And I get along with a couple men but you are not supposed to so I'm not sure how that's supposed to work. So I'm basically all alone in recovery and since it's hard for me I have the tendency to start to isolate when I try and things don't work out. I'm not sure how you make friends in recovery but I do hope you have an easier time then I have
Yes
Once I worked the steps, I became very good at making new friends. It’s easier to make new friends when your life doesn’t revolve around yourself so much.
Not sure how old you are, but it's definitely tough to meet sober friends in your 20's. When I first got sober in my 20's, I completely isolated for about 9 months before finding NA and AA. You can make sober contacts there, and depending on where you live, they might even specifically have meetings geared toward younger people. but I personally had more luck reconnecting with old friends from highschool who weren't in to drinking and drugging like that and they are my best friends today. They are supportive and willing to do so we activities with me. Try signing up for fun classes or activities you enjoy that don't revolve around drinking.
Maybe try and find a good young persons meeting. A lot of them do fellowship (outings) after. It’s pretty rad
