Anyone else ever feel like you're missing out on all

Been sober now for about 1&1/2 years now and cant help but feel like everyone here is in some special club having all the fun talking non stop about their experiences the night before or what their favorite drinks are every day. Knowing I'm not part of that club anymore makes it feel like im the boring one who cant relate to anyone, makes me feel like a stranger which has made it hard for me to stay where I am today but I have so far.. thinking about getting a dog to distract me from all of it so I atleast have a furry friend to relate to and take care of to take my mind off things. Just curious if anyone has felt the same way? Had to turn down a fellow co worker as hard as it was as he wanted to do a pub crawl downtown where I'd likely meet a lot of people and have a lot of fun if I did go and break my sobriety but I know it could also cause me to do some dumb decisions all over again.. guess I'm both glad that I had the strength to say no but also missing the fun I used to have doing things like that.

Yuupp :frowning: My best friends from childhood just got married in Feb in DR at an all inclusive resort & I could not go bc of my prior actions while drinking and it also would not have been a good environment for me to stay strong in. I have a very good group of friends but they all drink.. They do not have a drinking problem like I do. For month now, I have been staying away anytime they get together because I do not feel like I will fit in if I don’t drink and I don’t want the temptation to drink and God forbid create more issues. It’s so difficult… I am new to this journey and am just now starting to feel positive after my other friends wedding in Nov that I was a mess at and then missing my best friends wedding in Feb. I felt like I didn’t know how I was going to live with myself and get better but I have finally accepted my mistakes…owning up to them was not an issue- I learned accepting them was. I have no idea if I will ever be able to have the same friendships with these girls that have been like family to me but I hope & pray every day. In the meantime I am working on myself so I can live a happy life with or without them in it.

I am 100% team get a PUP!! :dog::heart: My boy doesn’t 100% full that void of human connection but gosh does he help! Unconditional love!!!

Prayers for your strength! Have you been going to meetings and meeting people there?

Well then It's good to know I'm not alone hahah. I imagine that would be tough, its hard making that kind of sacrifice, props to you for having that kind of strength. All of my friends do the same and makes it hard to have that same connection also. Sounds like you're doing well for yourself though, that is awesome to hear. I honestly never had a drinking problem in the past but made one very costly mistake one night and have never touched a bottle since.. kind of a woke me up in a way I guess, like you I accepted my mistakes and vowed never to go back since then. I never have gone to meetings really, only counceling after my mistake which was required, my family has been enough support for me to keep me from going back. For sure! dogs always have a way of making me laugh even when I feel like garbage. What dog do you have?? Was thinking of getting a german shepard.

I can imagine that being your wake up call. That is great you have a support system in place and went to therapy. Just thinking if you go to meeting or find other apps for sober ppl you can make friends that don’t just go out drinking and find that connection. I’m new to this so I have not really gone to meetings myself but this app is really helping me so far and I’m planning to implement a solid program eventually. I think even on bumble they have “bumble bff” maybe that’s a way to find sober friends too :woman_shrugging:t3::rofl:. I feel like it sounds so silly but I am at the point of also accepting it’s important to have sober friends too..

I have a Havanese..he is in my pics :dog:. He is a little guy- 12lbs! Lol He is perfect for me.. I can handle him..carry him like a baby, take him everywhere, sits on my lap, snuggles up next to me 24/7, and stays in bed until I get up! I love all dogs though.. German Shepards are great dogs! They say they are one of the most loyal breeds. Just be ready for the responsibility bc it can be a lot at times! Training, walking, feeding, not being gone too long..etc. Soooo worth it though!

You’re definitely not alone. I have felt this way before too. But I try to find other fun things to do instead like going out to dinner (not a bar), going to the movies, shopping, walking/hiking, literally anything lol
Sober life doesn’t have to be boring. We have a choice to make it fun - just might take a little effort since we are so used to do things around drinking. I think I have more genuine fun now…it’s not all warped by the booze. I get to actually have real feelings now which is scary AF but also really freeing.
Do you go to any meetings? Maybe meeting some other sober people in “real life” will help you to find more fun things to do. Myself I’m looking into retreats or camping or other activities with my group from AA…it’ll be my first time doing all of this so I’m nervous but I think it’ll be good for me.
Hang in there! Stay strong! Know that you aren’t alone and that you will be able to get through this
