Being clean, I’ve noticed that I’ve become a softy. I HATE confrontation and I hate when I feel I’ve done something to hurt someone or when someone may feel I’m being rude in any way. I’m QUICK to take something to heart because I’m not the person I once was.
My heart’s big. I have a tendency to want everyone to like me. And when they confront me with something or may not like something I’ve done, I really get heart broken and it could put me in a down spot for about 20 minutes wondering and having conversation with myself about how I could tell them how it made me feel (in the nicest way possible bc I don’t want them to not like me worse). I have to constantly remind myself that’s not how life works. I can’t take things personal. That person may have something else going on.
I have the same issue, it sounds like your an empath , drugs and alcohol make you numb so you don’t feel anything much , then when you get clean and sober all of your feels come back , the good ones and the bad with a vengeance!
Yessss!
When I first came to the rooms
I had nothing really to be happy about although I did find relief from the chains of addiction. Finally I found hope finally I found a life full of many options and great possibilities, no longer did I have to survive this miserable existence.. today I get to live.
The step traditions and spiritual principles of a 12 step program enabled me to become a loving productive member of society.
In no way am I promoting 12 step programs nor stating that that’s the only way to receive such gifts of life. There are plenty programs etc. out there and available.
I will tell you though.. this is whats working for me and I love the results
When I started implementing spiritual principles I became a marshmallow cream puff a big ol soft with fillings.. a loving goof ball.
It was tough when this started happening I thought I was loosing my identity becoming some weirdo push over.. I was becoming the man I was truly ment to be and it was extremely uncomfortable.
I started allowing others to walk all over me mentally spiritually and emotionally.. although I still managed to keep up the fake persona of being hardened.. mind you it was a fake persona it was no longer me or who I thought was me.
I got tired of others walking all over me so I had to learn boundaries.. healthy boundaries as well learning how to treat codependency.
So yes I totally relate with your post about feeling like a softy.
Today I’m not a pushover or a martyr.
I am a softy I embrace it, I am a goofy puff ball today I am loved.. now selfless no longer selfish.
As a man I am love
I can see that I have a lot to learn. Thank you for that
We all have a lot to learn/experience.. the results are limitless.
More will be revealed infinity and beyond.. not just sky’s the limit.. at least that’s what Buzz light year says, he’s a cool cat so I’ll stick with his saying
Just remember, sobriety is a selfish program. Always put it and you first in everything you do. Without it all else fails. You’ll get the hang of it. We all want to be super good when starting out. There is a balance to be found eventually. Just don’t use and you’ll find it.
I second what Tommy said about boundaries. When we’re struggling with addiction, our lives often naturally revolve around our needs to the exclusion of other people’s. I can imagine that after getting fully sober, a ton of emotions flood into your brain that were being hidden by addiction. In addition to fear/guilt/anger/embarrassment, we are also now more exposed to and aware of other people’s physical/emotional needs. You may want to sacrifice your own well-being to make others happy because of guilt for operating differently for so long, or for many other reasons. But having a strong, healthy set of boundaries and knowing how to enforce them with love is going to help EVERYONE in the situation
Very true my friend in the begging we learn to crawl then walk and in return we learn to selflessly give of ourselves.. the spiritual principles of recovery are designed in a selfless manner. This is one of the reasons why it’s a we program not a me program. Thank you so very much brother for being a part of my recovery as well others (we).
Thank God I don’t have to walk through life alone
I’m such a broken record…work the steps. You will learn how to deal with resentment, guilt, and shame. They will show you how to set boundaries.
You guys are amazing
I saw that you were doing your work. Do you have a sponsor helping you with that?
Yes I do. Lol she said the same thing. I’m needing to work on my boundaries
Ha that’s great. Keep working, friend. It will get better.
I feel the same way. I’m so glad I’m not alone. Thank you who have sent me supportive messages
What and where are the steps?
The steps are the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
You will have to Google them this app will not let me post any links.
Ps-There is also a NA version that’s almost identical.
