Anyone else still feel like they're ashamed of having to

Anyone else still feel like they're ashamed of having to be sober ? Or that the best decision you ever made was to quit drinking but the worst decision was to tell anyone ? Or hating the fact that you're identity to all your "friends" and family is that you're an alcoholic and every conversation involves them at some point asking about "how's the drinking?" I don't want sobriety to be my identity.

Hi. Takes a lot of courage to admit you are an alcoholic and to become and remain sober. How long have you been sober?

Me. I chose not to tell anyone for the first few months. Everyone’s situation is different though, and everyone’s sober journey has its own path. Find what works for you and makes you feel comfortable/supported.

That is great!
I’m now 10 1/2 years sober and life is pretty good! It is not perfect but that is OK. The first 2 years were very hard for me my as my brain had to heal and get back to normal as did my physical health. There’s a lot of anxiety, fear, and shame. This is normal but it will pass if this is what you’re feeling. Those who are not an alcoholic can never understand how you feel and what you’re going through. That is OK. Remember you’re on the road to great sobriety, health, and a good life if you stick to the principles of AA. Alcoholics are very sick and not picking up is the first step to sobriety. If someone you knew had an illness or disease and they were not taking care of it you might say something to help them. Alcoholism is a disease. Just remember that you are taking care of yourself and your mental and physical health. For alcoholics, without sobriety there are 3 options that can happen:
get arrested
Hospitalized
Death

Don’t worry about what others think and go to a meeting, listen to others ,find people like yourself to speak with, and know that many of us were in your position. It will be OK as long as you don’t pick up and go to meetings.:+1::pray:

Wow… I’m right there with you on all fronts. It’s really tough. But the more I live for my own self love and approval daily, the stronger I grow in my belief of me. It’s mandatory that alcoholics be SELFISH about living sober. So you stay strong and keep sharing. Myself and others on this site will be right here for you. Thanks for the share bro.
