Anyone else struggle with sobriety when the world is talking

Anyone else struggle with sobriety when the world is falling apart? Seeing news like the shooting today makes me want to grab wine and hide from the world.

Same but all that it will do is cause a hangover. Double depression

Nah… I know it won’t change anything, and I have been down that road. It doesn’t lead to anywhere good.

Yesss! I’ve made a conscious decision to detach from news and politics. I can lose my emotional sobriety very quickly if I’m not careful. While it’s impossible to avoid it, I’m very mindful about what I feed my mind. We are powerless over most everything in this crazy world. One challenge I have coming up is hurricane season. I’m a weather freak, and I live in South Florida. I’m obsessed with these darn storms lol.

Your mind is much like your body. Feed your body healthy foods and you get positive results. Vice versa when you eat unhealthy foods. So if you feed your mind with negative news or articles then it will have a negative affect on your mind. Try to find things that are hopeful and optimistic in news articles/clips. It’s good to stay educated with what is going on with the world, but don’t dig too deep. Negativity from the news can put you in a bad state of mind, and give you a distorted perspective on all things around you. Life is much better with a positive outlook even if the world seems to be falling apart.

Remember when you begin to have feelings like this. Go to a meeting, call your sponsor or a sober friend. We are hopeless to our addiction and the things that trigger our thoughts into believing that a drink or using our drug is the answer to peace. When in fact we know the end result.

I agree with you 110%!
No news is supposed to be good news, hence, if youre thriving on the news all youre going to get is grief and strife! I dont know how the ppl that thrive on politics do it bc thats all abt corruption which is another very grief stricken situations. Every now and again to keep yourself abreast of whats going on in the world, but like every part of our lives, everything has to be in moderation and unfortunately thats where ppl in recovery fall short sometimes including yours truly bc i dont know how to find my balance!

Here’s a hint that has worked for me. Because of my job, I literally can’t avoid social media. Twitter and TikTok are my faves and I probably have an addiction there too. However, I have been able to use “mute word/phrases”, follows, and feedback to train the algorithms that I do not want to see politics and only want to see either professional development or recovery related content. I have found recovery/sober TikTok is AMAZING. Once the algorithm knows you watch and engage with that content, it gives you more of it and suggests more content providers.

I don't know why, but I'm the opposite. It kind of fuels me to continue to be better each day.

News is designed for fear and control. It will make you feel like giving up and buying in. I do like what some people are doing to encourage others to keep what they have.

I just limit my exposure to the news, it relieves a lot of stress and anxiety that’s unnecessary in my life.

Thing about life is that you can’t hide from it. And booze will never help. Life will be there when you’re sober again. We cannot control others actions, we can only control and focus on our own. Head up!

I personally don’t watch it and I gave up Facebook 5 years ago because of the negativity and bad news posts. I’m in a much better place mentally because of it.

The world isn't falling apart. It has always been this dysfunctional. It's justore obvious now. Don't worry about it. Keep the things you can kind of control in order. Kinda like a "think locally" mentality. You'll go crazy trying to understand the problems of the world.

It's been a tough past two to three years. Focus on what you can control and love the people and pets you hold dear. Alcohol has never helped me with any real problem, just delayed it or made it worse.

Doesn’t make me want to drink but it makes me wanna run to the mountains and forget about the world for awhile.
