Anyone find themselves losing friends due to sobriety? I’m almost 1 1/2 years sober and have seen a big shift in the past 6+ months and wondered if other ppl experienced the same. It’s a weird place to be in tbh, but I know my sobriety comes first, always.
It’s tuff out there. It’s like EVERYTHING revolves around drinking…..music
sports you name it. So my circle
is my family. I totally get it. Yes I know you can do the same things sober but I’m definitely not to that point yet! Keep doing you !!! 1.5 years wow
I haven’t been there in over 5 years, but I will
Yeah… but really were those actually friends or just people you would party with? I found the people that truly matter in my life are still there… the ones that didn’t are gone, and good riddance to them.
I’m lucky to have super supportive friends. I don’t have that many tho, quality over quantity.
I lost a couple but gained like dozens of new ones that are much truer friends! She Recovers is a great place to start if looking!
I have had a complete shift in friendships, my childhood friends are still there but everyone I drank with is gone. Luckily I have a new host of friends I’ve gained in recovery.
Yup. At just over a year sober, if it involves alcohol at all I don't want to be around it. I have zero want to drink, but rather get very annoyed very quick how other act with it. Or hang on me... breath smells.. we all know that person.
Yeah since my sobriety I don’t have many friends that I had in the past, my life is completely so different. More alone since sobriety which isn’t bad there are people in the meetings I attend that’s helpful, family, few friends I have left. In recovery just learning I’m not alone out here real people are showing up in my life.
Yep, I’m my case it’s my own fault. I used for 30 years and all of my relationships involved use of some sort. So when I got sober I had no one. 3& 1/2 years later I’ve made some good friends in AA but I don’t have any ‘old friends’ any more.
That’s good stuff Willie, keep it up!
Actually for me it’s quite the opposite. With my AA friends and network I have more friends than ever!
I have found I have made more friends. Real friends that actually care about me and want me to be successful in my recovery and in life. The so called friends I lost when I got sober where just drinking buddies that wanted someone to drink with.
Yes and they 'friends' say it's because they did not want to tempt me . So they dont even call or text anymore. On the bright side is my true true day one friend still call and ask to do stuff . Only a handful but they are all i need and i love them
I totally lost every partying friend I had. I don’t associate with anyone who is in active addiction.
I can be around “normies”but if anyone gets drunk .. I’m out. I don’t hang around.
My true friends support my sobriety and would never condone me using.
And I see 12 new friends you have loving you on this very thread. I hope you weave a tapestry!
What friends I don’t have anyone to hang out with. The only people I see is my kids and my coworkers I have a lot of fun at work though. We laugh all day mostly at my expense. But I am a bit of a character
It's normal and as your life progresses and changes you'll realize that it was all for the good anyway. I don't even know anyone anymore that I used to party with.
Life changes, I have changed.
I don't hang around with people who do drugs or alcohol. We all know how to laugh and have a good time without it too.
I've noticed that many people who drink a lot don't usually feel comfortable having people around them that don't drink.
They ask you why you don't drink and if you tell them the truth, everybody starts to justify why they don't have a drinking problem.
I think that is so funny.
Yes girl! I could talk all day about it!
This has been my same experience as well Dave. My lifestyle choices have been viewed as a mirror by friends that I used to spend time with. Even though I can be around them while they are consuming and chill, it’s more so they shun the uncomfortable thoughts my mere presence seems to bring. That’s on them to grapple with.
Unfortunate, a bit sad sometimes but not uncommon or surprising at this rate. They know I’m always here for them if they ever need a sober friend, if they decide to join me.
The new crowd I’ve found by attending programs may be a “messy” bunch by comparison but in a raw-chasing-growth way. I’m down for the latter. I’d rather surround myself with those always striving to be a better human as a lifestyle. It truly is a natural progression that I view as positive. The in between loneliness is but a blip to overcome momentarily on the way over.
Yes me to! I have been sober a little over 6 months and nobody calls me to go out anymore.
