Anyone gone to NA for alcoholism?

Tonight’s only meeting is a WOMENS meeting and I’m rly not fond of the secretary and I don’t leave feeling the same passion and relief and support from those meetings as I do my regular AA meetings. But I was told there’s an NA meeting tonight. Can I even attend that? Are they a lot the same?

I would give the NA meeting a chance. Be aware that many more may be doing the meeting purely as a court requirement. One I went to didn’t have the same feel as an AA meeting but it’s similar in format and the message is essentially the same. Another couple felt more similar but it will all depend on the group just like AA meetings

Definitely! Alcohol is a DRUG. Try to raise your hand and tell the group who you are. I'm recovering addict who's been going to NA meetings for many years. WE welcome all. Thank-you.

This is from "How it works" in the NA Basic Text.

"Thinking of alcohol as different from other drugs has caused a great many addicts to relapse. Before we came to NA many
of us viewed alcohol separately, but we cannot afford to be confused about this. Alcohol is a drug. We are people with the disease of addiction who must abstain from all drugs in order to recover."

I don’t do drugs tho is kinda the opposite problem. I also kinda worry maybe it’ll make me wanna try drugs :joy: I know that’s just my stupid addicted voice in my head that’s like na we don’t need recovery :joy:

How about doing an AA zoom meeting then?

Lol both NA and AA are pretty much the same. I personally just relate to NA better because alcohol was my gateway to harder substances. I would always relapse to drugs after drinking. Lol just as it says right in How It Works.

I do sometimes but with how hard things have gotten with the cps stuff lately I rly need the in person connection

But I do go to both. I don't discriminate lol. The steps are the same and the stories ppl tell are the same. Its basically all the same.

Do they sign cards and say NA on them? I kinda worry about my court card saying NA instead of AA

Ummm, honestly I'm really not sure. I've never had to sign a card or had to have a card signed but I don't think so. I think the chair person just signs their nane and the name of the group. I wouldn't think the court would care. As long as you're going to some type of self help program that deals in alcoholism/addiction recovery.

I just reread your original post. Part of me wants to say you should go to that women’s only AA meeting, and learn to be tolerant of this secretary that rubs you the wrong way. She is one of us. I’m sure she’s got a story. Say a prayer and ask your HP to lead the way

Same here. I like the in person connection as well. However, when in a life on life's terms pinch the zoom meetings come in handy. Then again so does a good friend and/or sponsor. I'm not sure how you could get a card signed via zoom.

No. They just sign your paper from your po or court or whomever. Most of my papers were ripped out of a typical spiral notebook. I'd also recommend saying addict or addict alcoholic if you intoduce yourself. It shows respect and that you dont think youre better because you only drank.

I asked a friend first and found out they’d put NA on the card so I went to the AA meeting instead. I can’t risk cps claiming I have a drug problem on top of everything else. None of this is court ordered.

I did go. She’s just extremely self centered and arrogant and rude. Sadly it’s not just me that doesn’t like her. These meetings only have 3-4 people who attend so 50% of it’s her talking and not letting anyone else talk  I’m glad it’s just once a week tho

NA are great meetings for me sometimes and I'm an alcoholic but my theory is I can use all the help I can get. Look for similarities be open minded and friendly if you can . Hope this helps

It depends on the meeting as far as court cards.

I have my own cards just for cps and court to protect myself so I can prove I’m doing what I can to better myself for my kids. But can risk them signing NA meeting on them as my friend who invited me to go said they would cuz then they’d be like oh so now you have a drug problem too? And make my cps case worse. So I just stuck with the AA meeting

OK cool. But just so you know, for future reference, NA doesn't separate the drugs. When we say "I'm clean..." it means free from ALL substances, whether it’s cannabis, pill’s, booze, heroin, etc. Narcotics Anonymous doesn’t make any distinctions. We don’t say “clean and sober” for example. Anyway, it’s sounds like you’re doing well! Good luck and God bless.
