Anyone have any advice on how to manage triggers? When I was anxious or on edge, the first thing I did was reach for a drink. I’m on medication, which helps, but I’m still having a really hard time.
I just have to do a hard pause. Give yourself 5 minutes to decompress. My triggers are most always things I can't control, people, places, and things. I say the serenity prayer and generally the craving goes away.
Rachel, I hear you! Interrupting your behavior is key in these situations. For me, I go for walk/jog. It always helps me. I also reach for a healthy snack or beverage, like an apple or some nuts, sparkling flavored water. Sometimes the very act of reaching for something to drink that’s not alcohol helps me too. Meditation is also a big help. You got this.
Avoid them. lol
Seriously though, call someone when you are triggered.
Play the tape through... Try to envision the consequences if you act on those triggers. Going back out and doing more research invites all the " yets " onto the playing field. Strength is in numbers! Call someone safe.
I came up with a mantra when I felt triggered by my anxiety/panic to drink. "I have no desire to drink, I have no reason to panic." I repeated this so many times throughout the first few months until I actually believed it.
Prayer, some deep breaths, maybe ‘box breathing’ - which has really helped me to focus, and EFT (Emotional Freedom Tapping) - which is the most powerful tool I have. Almost like magic. I went to an in person class to learn it, but it’s probably on YouTube. The trigger response gets weaker the longer you stay clean or sober.
