Brad absolutely! I can say that probably 95% of anyone seeking sobriety and a meeting had reservations and or full on panic attacks! But once your there you will find relief and healing and love and pain and growth and…. Where are you located? You may be able to call ahead and speak with one of the facilitators and that way you have an instant in at least one person‘s name walking in the door. If you’re anywhere near a celebrate recovery, you can take anyone with you to that meeting and they will get something out of it, celebrate recovery as for hurts, hangups and habits…..and there’s not a person in this world that doesn’t have one of those. I’ll be praying for you Brad!

Hi Brad, having the gumption to reach out, break a cycle, and attend a meeting is definitely going to be anxiety inducing. What I can say is that it is totally worth it. It may be uncomfortable at first, but try a few meetings and you will find some people who you connect with and get plugged in. You got this. You are worth it.

Any anxiety that I had was squashed pretty quickly. Go in with the mind set that not only are you getting help but you also help people with time under their belt stay sober by passing along the message.

I have never met anyone who wanted to go to their first meeting. I honestly went just to prove my dad wrong. I went just so I could get him off my back. Luckily for me, that’s where I found my people.

Felt so much anxiety going alone to my first meeting! The wonderful thing was that when I got there, I finally knew I wasn’t alone in this. Even if I didn’t particularly connect with the group structure, etc., being in the presence of people who get it made all the difference. I didn’t find a group that fit until checking out a few different places, so if it doesn’t feel right at first, keep going! Good luck and proud of you for taking this step.

Oh yeah driving to your first meeting (if you still have a license) then opening the meeting room door that feels like 1000. Pounds, looking at your shoes because you can’t believe this is where your life ended up! That is the shittiest feeling. It actually is one of the best days of your life, if you keep an open mind. I was a bit leery of how nice everyone was at first and thought it was an act. It wasn’t an act! There are alot of great people in recovery. You’ll find a group of people there that you will click with. All I can say is dont judge recovery from just 1 meeting. Every meeting is different and you’ll have to go to many to find the ones you like. If your struggling any meeting, is better than no meeting.

I am in Chicago. Brad good luck. If you call your local AA branch, you will be able to connect with someone and they will most likely take you to your first meeting.
