I urge you to never stop caring. Society looks at us as drunks and addicts. We are people. We deserve to be treated like everyone else.
I had a patient at my detox get incredibly sick, to the point that it was beyond withdrawal and he needed admitted to the hospital. He was taken out of detox’s care. But what did I do?
I went to his floor and room and visited with him. Went to the vending machine to get him Gatorade.
He isn’t my patient anymore but he is my brother in recovery. I took an oath to care for my patients.
And I took a moral oath to look out for my people in recovery. I strongly encourage you all to do the same.

Very nice! It’s gotta start somewhere. We gotta end the negative stigma of addiction and mental health issues. People don’t wanna admit they struggle and get help out of fear of what some others will think of them or say about them. We may have our “issues,” but we are people. And we need other people in our corner.

Thank you Tracy! WDs from a lot of different things can be extruciating. I know from personal experience too that there are a very large number of people throughout the country being booked into jails and being held in locked down cells and isolation without any support for their WDs. The jail system I've been exposed too is not setup to help people, it only traumatizes them. This type of culture can change.

This disease has a mental component that “normies” will never understand. My mind has “tricked” me into drinking many times, and has the ability to “forget” about the consequences. It’s even hard for me to understand how this happens, so I get why others don’t. As you say, we need to take care of one another.

Oh I’ve heard such horror stories from withdrawals in jail. I can’t even imagine.
That’s awesome Tracy!! Very well said!! I think we are all siblings in recovery. And I also think the most important thing we can do is work with and care for our fellow brothers and sisters! Nothing more ensures my sobriety than working with another alcoholic!!
