Been in love with an alcoholic for over 2 years

Been in love with an alcoholic for over 2 years now. I mean I drink too, but usually just on the weekends. He’s every day. Been praying for him to want help. He even had a wake up call over the summer where he passed out in a pool from dehydration during the hot weather and spent the next three days in the hospital running all kinds of tests. He swore he was done drinking. He actually went 12 days without a drink but now it’s worse than ever. I want to help him but I don’t know what to do. Him and I have gotten in several arguments over his drinking. Breaks my heart. I would love for him to see an app like this. Maybe next time I am with him I can show him how I am trying to quit drinking with this app and maybe he could try it too.

Can’t make a loved one get sober. Only worry about yourself. Lead by example. Need be, stop enabling. How can you expect him to get sober if you aren’t also? Bring him here yet he’s gotta want it.

Yep, can't make them see the light. I recently lost the love of my life due to my drinking. Together for 7 years. Lived together for 6. I'd had always been a heavy drinker since I was 15 but it really really got bad during the covid lockdown. I saw that a rift was going between us and I proposed in an attempt to save the relationship. Although at the time I didn't see it that way, I guess it was a subconscious descion looking back. She said no and left me, and I'd say it was 80% due to my drinking. That didn't make me stop either, I only got worst. I had to truly hit rock bottom emotional to accept I had a problem. That was just recently. Going on 2 months sober at the moment just trying to pick up the peices and move forward. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Hi Renee, unfortunately I echo those prior, we cannot help other people get sober. They need to want it themselves, and then they need to do the work. BUT you getting sober may be an example for him. If that’s absolutely what you want then pursue it, show him how great it is to be sober, and maybe he will have a shift in his thinking.

You are totally right

Proud of you on your two months. Keep it going. Things can only get better right?!

Thanks for the reply, you are right alcohol is chaos walking. I hate it. I hate how weak we are and can’t just stop when we want to.

I’ve tried moving on, but we always end up back together. It’s that toxic cycle that’s so hard to break. He’s got a good heart, that’s what keeps me around.
