Been in treatment for 4 weeks and my counselor unexpectedly

Been in treatment for 4 weeks and my counselor unexpectedly quit. I feel completely abandoned and betrayed. Treatment is supposed to be safe and I’m being forced to start over with a new counselor tomorrow. I’m absolutely lost and realizing my entire treatment had been compromised by my counselor not having her heart in the work. I was originally supposed to discharge tomorrow but had been begging to stay longer as I feel I haven’t made any progress. My old counselor never put my extension through but the director of the program is advocating for me to stay and get the help I need. Kinda venting because I am craving.

Hi Emily, a suggestion: there are forces that you cannot see working. It is not your counselors fault, if they needed to leave then they needed to leave. Your focus should be on you and your recovery. Treatment is supposed to prepare you to go back out into the real world, and in the real world people leave. It’s frustrating and can be painful, but it’s not about you. These things happen, and we need to learn to adapt and roll with the punches. As MJ says, our recovery should be a solid rock, unchanged by the shifting ocean. You got this, you are still in your program, and it sounds like you have someone advocating to let you stay. That is awesome! Now dig into your recovery and keep learning from the people around you until you have to go back into the world sober.
