being lgbt and sober feels really isolating. most lgbt safe spaces are clubs and bars, and while there are many accepting folks in recovery/addict spaces, it feels incredibly hard finding lgbt sober people my age. i can't help but feel like an outsider in every community, for one reason or another. while the friends i have are supporting of my recovery, i still feel lonely and like they don't truly understand. which is fine, i'm glad my friends don't have this mindset, i wouldn't wish it upon anyone. but at the same time i wish i knew at least someone in person who did, maybe i wouldn't feel so lost trying to navigate both these communities.

I always feel like I'm isolated. I have been out as transgender a little over a year ago I am more at peace but I'm lonely too. I just wish I was "normal"

As a father to a 
child, your feelings land very strong with me. I’m happy to hear that you have found people in recovery who are accepting and loving. I feel the meetings I attend, and the fellowship that I interact with, are at least supportive and open to welcoming all individuals that have a desire to stop drinking. That being said, I still get that you can still feel lonely. Have you tried any meetings? I know in some bigger cities there are several available. Otherwise, there are definitely some on zoom. My hope is that with more time in sobriety, and the more work you do on healing yourself, that you feel more comfortable and meet a few people in recovery. In the end, we all need to work on self love, so that we find more peace and serenity

I hear you, Shannon. I have some sober friends who were in your shoes too. I’m not sure if AA has this or not, but SMART Recovery has a group just for lgbtq and allies. Check them out!

The Luckiest Club is an awesome group and I know they have several meetings that are specifically for LGBTQ+ folks. I’ve really enjoyed the Luckiest Club in general, but also there seems to be a pretty good sized LGBTQ group. (Tomorrow at 3 is a “Quee r-focused closed group” for example)
