Might sound cliche but getting my feelings back and getting my feelings back. Feel it all the way through. It’s ok. This too will pass. ODAAT❤️

Life is way more unstable when your using. The highs and lows aren’t as extreme when you’re not living hour to hour. It’s not easy in the beginning, you really have to lean on others. But if you can make it a a few months without caving you won’t even think about using when something happens. It just won’t make sense to you after not using for so long. You just have to hold tf on for a little while. It sucks but it’s worth it. In a year I went from homeless in Kensington, to a career, a car, and I just got back from a 10 day long vacation in Jamaica. It’s worth it. Trust me

The first year was like a roller coaster! I cried all the time for no reason at all. Dam n feelings and no sedation! Now, 17 years later it’s more like the v edges of lasagna - little tiny peaks and valleys - and more tools in my toolkit to be better able to deal with them.

Getting a true and honest perspective of life. And finding friends who will be there for both the ups and downs. In my experience, a bottle or pipe can never replace someone who truly cares about you.

There is no worst part in my opinion. For me, getting sober was much easier than staying out there.

When I was getting sober I was told I would feel better. They were right, I can feel being angry better, dissapointment better, sadness and shame better. But I also feel clarity better, Happiness better, and love better. It comes down to the fact that it's all about being present. There is nothing in the world that is more amazing than being present and engaged in a difficult moment then feeling the bliss of overcoming it.

Worst part about it was the struggle in the first month. After that, I enjoy every second I get with my son. I workout everyday. Both my son and working out are my addiction. I put $10 in a jar, sometimes more everyday if I even have a thought about a drink and even if I don’t have a thought because now it’s just a norm everyday to put it in the jar. What I put in the jar goes to my sons college fund and also a nice trip we can take together (sober obviously). You would be surprised how much you were actually spending daily. With that said, you will learn how to make a negative into an absolute positive. The money jar doesn’t have to go forwards your kid if you have one. It can be something that you alone always wanted to do. It makes it a goal to achieve and it is something to keep you motivated the rest of your life. I have much more, but don’t want to bore you ha.

Waking up in the morning and not feeling like awful. Also, going to a venue where alcohol is served and being able to enjoy the atmosphere and event that may be happening and not want/need an alcoholic beverage. Worst: just wanting one…and knowing if you do, it’s back to square one. Especially if you quit because you were a binge drinker, which is the reason I sobered up in the first place.

Best (so far): health. Having an appetite, having an attention span, strength, balance, sleeping through the night, not hiding bottles

Worst (so far): wondering if I'll ever be able to enjoy social interaction again, dreading vacation

Best part is just enjoying life and seeking out new experiences again. Not second guessing everything because of substance use. Enjoying live music again. Worst is new social pressure not existing circles where your friends support you. And feeling like caffeine and nicotine are staples of my life but working on those.

There are so many best parts but I think feeling alive covers most of them. It’s also nice to be of some use to the world today instead of always trying to make the world of use to me. And there aren’t really highs and lows. Which I find so wonderful!! The worst has been dating. Trying to find someone on a similar path to mine has not been easy!!

The best part is being the best version of myself. The worst part is the pain that comes with letting go of people, places, and things, that no longer serve me

Great question Kyla! I think the best thing I’ve gained since being sober is my family’s renewed trust in me. I’m finally becoming the man they always thought I was and seeing them finally start to relax, I don’t think they will ever be completely relaxed but seeing a little of that weight lift of them has been really rewarding. The hardest part has probably coming to grips with the quiet times. The quiet has always been hard for me but I’m battling it everyday

The best part for me has been being able to help other people in AA. It's made all the difference for me.

Not sure of the worst part yet. Ups and downs ya know, but no real stand outs at the moment.

Best thing, going to jail and making a deal with my God I’d listen. Worse thing, wrecking my scooter and landing in hospital for a month banged up because I forgot to start my day with him in charge. How to deal… meetings and being plugged into recovery 24/7. Oh, most of all…freedom!
