I just got home from my first AA meeting.
I absolutely loved it.

This is big news!! I’m glad you loved it! For me it’s an hour to pause the world and center myself. It connects me with a feeling of togetherness and family. It’s a place I can go and unwind after work. It’s a time to feel grateful, and improve my mental health (attitude). Soooo…I have a question for you Rachel. You’ve been around for a minute on Loosid. What has kept you from going before? Not to put you on the spot, but maybe your answer may help another person.

That’s a great question. I think a big part of it was my aversion to religion. It made me nervous, I was wary that people might try to push their beliefs on me. I think I’ve also been scared to form genuine connections. It’s not something that I have a lot of experience with, so it made me feel really scared.

I also don’t think I’d accepted that this would be my life. I think going to AA this morning was a huge step in fully admitting that I’m an alcoholic, and I need help.

I bet your honest replies resonate with a lot of people. The stigma of the word alcoholic is awful. We all need to put away the shame. I’m proud of you! Any questions, please let me know. I went to my first meeting when I was 24. I struggled forever with the antiquated words and terms used in the big book, and the steps. Find some sober sisters, and it’ll change your world.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
