Does anyone know why AA stops the monthly chips at 1 year and then the next chip is at 18 months…then annual after that? I would think why not monthly chips until 2 years? I know quite a bit about the program but not the thinking behind receiving birthday chip/coins.

Great question, coins or mile stones are not mentioned at all in the big book. My understanding from my sponcor with 43 years of sobriety is that it’s a relatively recent way to celebrate milestones and that after a year the members via group vote, is that after that critical first year, we should have a foundation to make longer milestones. He said that when he got sober there were not chips in his early groups.

A meeting I used to go to gave monthly chips. Until a certain point (don’t know why). My husband bought me my 2 year chip and haven’t received any since I will have 27 months January 3. I guess it depends on meetings my meetings were all zoom.

Why not an AA kayak at 20 years? I’d love that.
