Body dysmorphia

Despite my drug and alcohol abuse, I still managed to maintain my fitness. Since I’ve gotten clean and sober it’s been harder to maintain my slim physic. I experienced 40lb weight gain. I realize I was slim because of cocaine and adderall use. My mind is having a hard time that I am healthy now, and the weight is normal. Just sharing some of the cycles of getting sober. I have body issues, insecurities, which is probably why I drank and partied so much. At one point, it gave me confidence, but it was false confidence.

Oh yeah I know exactly what your talking about false confidence and can’t kid yourself I was healthy but wasn’t when losing weight I didn’t abuse addiction I started having more health issues and it made me realize it was another form of addiction eating and not caring about my body I relapsed and here I am because I use the same thing u abused and you know what I’m doing now I and only 12hr clean and I got a mirror near me reminding me don’t do it and say to myself “be the person you wish you had” and it’s one day at a time sweetie you got this chin up!

It’s common to gain some weight back when you get sober. I struggle with some insecurities about the way I look too. If you’re in early recovery I would imagine your weight will probably rebound back down after a little while. I’m sure you look find the way you are.

"Only 12 hours clean"?!
You realize that 24 hours is the record, right? We stay clean a day at a time!

I get this! I lost over 45 lbs when I got sober. If my weight goes up a few lbs i panic

False confidence indeed. I lost a lot of weight when I was shooting dope to but now that I’m sober I’m healthy and happy. A few extra pounds in a long life sure beats being skinny and in the grave

I suggest maybe over eaters anonymous?
I too had food issues in early sobriety. I ate a lot of junk foods. Gained about 45 pounds but I was also about 30 pounds underweight from Alcohol and meth use. It took me about 12-14 months of continuous sobriety to finally start eating healthy. I would hike a lot in early sobriety especially during Covid. I found out that I’m nightshade intolerant. This caused all kinds of problems with health and relationships. Today I do my best to eat healthy and exercise. I recently started a 3000 push-ups in November. So far I’m on schedule with 2800 pushups completed as of right now. I’ll be doing todays in a few minutes. Take baby steps. Start small. Set goals that are realistic. Reach that goal set another one. Repeat until you hit your target then maintain. When I fall short I don’t beat myself up anymore. I just get back up and try again. Failure is growth when we try something new the next time.
