I promised my son I’d stop drinking and made it 30 days and then while out on my own for the day ended up at the bar. Now I’m back at square 1 with a deeply offended wife and son. I just want to quit for good!!
Find an AA meeting, get connected with other recovering alcoholics, get a big book, get a sponsor, and start working the steps. If you have any mental illnesses discuss them with your sponsor when you find one and your doctor.
Most importantly whenever you feel like you’re going to drink talk to someone who can talk you out of it. Be it a sponsor or just someone you meet in AA.
Here is the deal: this is a disease not a charecter defect.
What made you walk into the bar? What were you feeling? Relapse happens. It’s a hard thing to just quit. Own it, apologize, and start over. My sponsor always told me in the beginning “ don’t be where you don’t need to be” it always stuck with me. We can’t do it alone, you need support. Get into a program of some sort…AA, recovery darma, smart recovery… something to help you when urges hit. Good luck man
Thank you all for the comments I joined an online addiction therapist and will start naltrexone as well as look for a group in my area. I definitely cannot do it on my own.
Download the apps
“in the rooms” and “meeting guide”
Both are free and have times and locations of meetings based off your gps.
You need to work some type of program in sobriety
James, I have been there. This is what happens when I choose to drink. All promises go out the window. This is discussed in the chapter “ more about alcoholism “ in the BB. It describes me to a T. I suggest reading it.
Obviously no one is excited about relapses but take it as a learning experience and move forward. To echo other sentiments, take note of what brought you to the bar. What clicked for me was writing down how did I end up in the predicament drinking got me to? Play it back and while you’re secure start producing safety protocols for you when you’re tempted. I pray for you my friend and your family.
