Bumpersticker

Why do all of the phrases / common language used in AA sound like phrases on a Bumpersticker? Sometimes it’s exactly what I need to hear and other times I have to focus on being kind just to not roll my eyes. Thoughts?

I understand completely. That's why I take each day, one day at a time....you see what I did there?

The mottos are explained in the book Living Sober.

I found humor really helps. I watch this show called “mom” about a group of women in recovery. They sort of make fun of the typical AA mottos but you understand it as well as the show makes you laugh which I find that I need during this time. But it also resonates so much. Check it out.

Hahaha too funny of an observation. Thanks

Early on, there were a number of slogans that used to really annoy me...right up to the point when I found myself saying them to someone else. 🤦

I first thought Think Think Think was instead of Drink Drink Drink until years later I saw the sign upside down to represent upside down thinking :joy:
Unless I interpreted that wrong too :upside_down_face:

I’m really early in my journey. I pray this annoyance is simply my inexperience with what it means to work this program to stay sober.

Give it time, Lisa. Believe it or not, they will make sense in time.

The slogans used to make my eyes roll sometimes too. Now I find myself repeating them in my head when I’m alone throughout my day. Consider it another tool to help you along the way.

Lol, Jeff. That was funny! I completely understand Lisa. I used to feel the same way. Then I realized the cheesy little statements actually work…

Creepy phrases

They make me cringe. Maybe because it’s so early in the process.

Ok. I’m trusting.

Thanks Tiff. I’m trusting.

I feel the same way when people say things like "God's grace" and "God's mercy" etc etc, but those things work for some people even though they make me want to vomit. To each their own, whatever keeps us sober.

I totally get the "One Day At A Time" though. It makes so much sense to me now. Sometimes these little sayings keep us going.

They are no worse than "Live, Laugh, Love"... :face_vomiting:
