Can anybody else relate?

I don’t like it when people ask you things like “what you like to do, what are your hobbies.” Everyone has a preconceived notion of what a certain thing means in their mind.

For instance, I can say “I like to cook” and that means about four thousand different things to people. But, when I say “I like to cook” what I really mean is I like going to the store, buying the best looking, cheap, piece of meat I can, some vegetables, maybe a potato, and preparing that for myself. Because it’s vastly less expensive, and insanely more nutritious than just going to Wendy’s. That’s what I mean by “I like to cook.”

I don’t like being put into a box. And, when I hear questions like “what do you do for fun” all I hear is “how can I classify you, file you away, take no effort to actually get to know you, and make sure you don’t take up too much space in my brain.”

I’m going to start saying “I don’t like to do anything.”

I can kinda relate but I would suggest expounding on your answer to whoever asks you that question just like you did here for us and it might build an even better relationship with said person no matter how big or small that relationship is. I feel short answers show the person you are not interested enough to give them your time and yourself. Just my thoughts.

This is my opinion only, so take that for what it’s worth. It sounds like you don’t want to be open, and let people in. When someone asks about hobbies, it is a way to see if there is a commonality in personality for conversation or connection. By closing yourself off by short answers, you are basically shutting the door on possibility connecting or teaching someone. It’s not to put you in a box. It is to get to know you.
