Can anyone please educate me regarding the term “dry drunk?” I was told today that I could become one because I’ve quit alcohol without seeking any professional or spiritual help. Not that I’m opposed to doing so. Im just a relatively private/shy person.

You're just one of the few people that quit cold turkey and just go about your day. No AA, no groups, therapy. This last time I got sober I was a dry drunk. Drank half of a tall boy and it tasted so bad to me that I haven't picked up a drinks since, and I'm going to my first meeting in 16 years soon.

“Dry drunk” usually means someone who quit drinking but hasn’t done the inner work yet.

Thanks, that’s definitely me. I hope it doesn’t come back to bite me. I’m too introverted to be comfortable in an AA environment. I may give it a try though.

It's a way for AA people to sound superior.

I was a dry drunk my first 5 years. I quit using. But I didn’t change anything else in my life. I was still arrogant, nasty, belligerent with a mouth full of 4-letter words. Still tending bar, going to same parties with same friends. And going to AA. Nothing changes if nothing changes. My life sucked and on my 5/ year anniversary I attempted suicide. I failed. Went back to AA got a sponsor and did the steps. Got an office job with benefits and my life changed drastically. Today I have 43 yrs and gained backed everything I lost drinking 10 fold.
