Can anyone tell me how many days/ months / sober

Can anyone tell me how many days/ months / sober events- activities it takes before it becomes a “new normal”? Is it possible to go a day without thinking about drinking? or is it a constant struggle. I am new and have not yet begun my sober journey physically— just mentally i want to begin so badly. I am scared that i don’t know “how” to live without it.. 20 yrs of programming literally everything to be a “trigger”. Looking for hope that it is possible.

They say it’s takes 21 days to make a habit. I can tell you it’s gets better. It gets easier and it becomes normal. I can say that one day you’ll go the whole day without thinking about using. Good luck I’m rooting for you. And reach out if you ever need.

thank you so much for your encouragement! I am not afraid I can’t quit (well a little) but I am quite afraid of not being able to maintain it for a lifetime. Which I really really need to do.

You can only take it one day at a time - today I won’t drink - it’s too much pressure on you if you think about a lifetime! Best of luck - rooting for you

Completely agree with what was already said above. It will be rough in the beginning but the more days you get behind you the easier it will become. Just starting your journey and thinking of a lifetime is very overwhelming! Please keep in mind that not everybody’s journey is the same so don’t get discouraged and give up if you have bad days because you’ll have plenty of more good days to make up for it! Pay attention to your emotions as well…I personally felt journaling helped me a lot. It was a safe space where I could write out all the good and bad that was going through my head without any fears. It also helped when I was having those bad days because then I could go back and read what I wrote on my good days as a reminder on why I was doing this. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you need anything as we are all here to support each other. You can do this!

Thank you so much for your encouragement! It brought a tear to my eye… I did quit (for 16 days - about 7 yrs ago).. and journaled during that time. I am going to try to find that journal! Thank you.
