Can you get sober without going to rehab?

Thanks for the encouragement! It’s helpful to know that other people in recovery have been successful without going to inpatient rehab. It gives me hope.

Thank you, Craig! I loved what you said about the gift of desperation. I’m definitely desperate at this point and willing to do whatever it takes to stay sober. Your post gives me hope. I know I’m moving in the right direction. Congratulations on 900 days! That’s amazing :star_struck: I’ll get there one day at a time.

I did and wasn't in jail or prison. I got into a bad accident, not in a car, and was brought back twice. I spent almost a week in the hospital but because of my daily care that I needed, no treatment center would take me. They said they found enough drugs and alcohol in me to kill an elephant. This drug counselor came in and gave me a meeting list. The rest us history 9.5 years ago.

Thank you, Mickey! I’ll definitely look into it.

Thank you, Jake. It’s good to know that the path to recovery is not one size fits all and that there are many avenues to sobriety. I am grateful to have the willingness to do whatever it takes to stay sober. It’s the first time in my life that I have felt this way. Thank you my friend and have a beautiful day :heavy_heart_exclamation:

Thank you, Lisa! Congratulations on 584 days sober  That is amazing. I really appreciate all of your advice and plan on incorporating it into my daily life. I pray that I am as successful as you.

Thank you, Michael! I appreciate you sharing your experience, strength and hope with me. I believe I can get sober without going to inpatient rehab and your story confirms that it can be done. Thanks again!

Thank you, dlc! I have been looking into resources where I live and am hoping to find an outpatient program to participate in. I think between IOP and working the steps with my sponsor I’ll be ok. Thanks again for your advice :slightly_smiling_face:

Never went to rehab, never went to AA. Just moved forward on knowing that the next time I drink, I could potentially kill myself or someone else. So I don’t. Focus on the things you’ll put in front of your substance abuse, like exercise, good daily habits, drinking water, etc. If you practice some sort of spirituality, it’s good to lean into that to strengthen your foundation of sobriety, let friends and colleagues know you don’t ever want to use again, and set boundaries with them all (I.E. I had to tell some good Army friends not to drink at my birthday party). By the by, do you until you get comfortable with you. And it may take a while to figure out your identity without your preferred substance there to take the edge off of things; everyone moves through life and responds to stress differently, so just take the engagement of everything that is a day at a time.

Thank you, Dave! I met with a psychiatrist re inpatient treatment and their policy is that you have to be sober for a few days prior to being admitted to the program. That sounds crazy to me because I know alcohol is the most dangerous substance to detox from and can require medical supervision. I have made is 3 days without drinking on my own and luckily I did not have a seizure or anything like that. My family was concerned about me detoxing without medical supervision but luckily it’s been ok so far. I’ve definitely been partaking in my fair share of sweets and salty snacks. Yesterday was a rough day for me. Thought I was going to relapse but I went to a lot of meeting and ate my favorite junk foods instead. I felt a little bit guilt about it but hey as long as I’m sober that’s all that matters. Thanks again for your advice!

Thank you, Andrew! I have never heard of the Sinclair Method. I’ll definitely check it out.

Thanks again! I’m looking forward to all of the blessings AA has to offer. Can’t wait to have what you have.

Your so welcome  with hard work, I’m sure you will have success. Don’t pick up no matter what and rely on the friends and the program, you are worthy

No rehab so far. Weekly meeting with therapist and support

I went to detox but not rehab. I was there for 4 days and then came home and have been religiously going to meetings. It's been working. 54 days sober today. Good luck!

Thank you, David! Great advice. I’m really looking forward to finding my true self. I wonder who the real me is at this point. It’s been months since I’ve been sober and I’ve never been sober longer than 3 months. I love what you said about focusing on the things that I’ll put in front of my substance. I’m starting to experience a lot of medical issues due to my addiction and am ready make my health a priority. Thanks again for your advice. It is greatly appreciated

Thank you, Sean. I am going to start seeing my therapist again. Luckily she gives me a huge discount since it is not covered by my insurance.

Thank you, Aja! Congratulations on 54 days sober

Tip for getting past 3 months: don’t focus on getting past the 3 months, focus on all the big things that will improve your position living a sober lifestyle. I never know what my total count is without looking at a tracker or asking Siri/Alexa how many days it’s been since my sobriety date (it’s kind of like finding money in a pocket of recently cleaned laundry - little bit of joy and excitement, but I don’t base my entire day off of it). Keep on building, and one day you’ll be at 3 years sobriety giving someone else tips based on your own life experiences. :metal:
