Celebrated three years sober

Last Friday was a great celebration! I enjoyed my club soda and lime at a good friend’s rehearsal dinner and drank coffee and tea into the evening, laughing with friends.

Here’s a situation that I have been struggling with - we were celebrating the beige the following day and when it came time for a champagne toast, the MOH (also a good friend said), “You can just hold a glass, you don’t have to drink it.” It made me feel uncomfortable. 20/20 hindsight and for next time, will bring my own seltzer or fun drink to the toast so I don’t have to hold champagne. I love to ritual of “cheers” for someone, just don’t love holding alcohol, especially for a picture, especially when someone else tells me to do it. This friend is getting married in the spring so I plan on mentioning it, “The toast with champagne at the previous wedding made me feel uncomfortable, so I will plan to bring my own yummy drink of choice to cheers to you this time around.”

What would you do in this situation?

Yeah, be nice to tell friend not to make a big deal again. They have grape champagne everywhere. Tastes great. And gosh dang, what a cool new you on those hard earned 3 years. Miracles never cease. Congratulations

:raised_hands: yes, thank you!

Congrats Maegan!! What a blessing to be sober 3 years!! That’s happened to me before as well. Others have no idea how uncomfortable we already are at these moments. Then, to call attention to it…ughh! Not sure why are non drinking makes others uncomfortable. Friends and family jump in all the time with “oh no he doesn’t drink”. WTFK… I drink. I drink a lot of things. I’m not a camel :camel:. It’s a blessing to have a choice today. It’s a blessing to have friends that care about us too. A nice conversation with your friend may help educate her on how not to act in the future. Meanwhile, you are rocking recovery!!

Way to go on three years! I just toast with water or coffee. I don’t let other peoples issues with my not drinking bother me. It’s their problem not mine.

Yes, so good to know I’m not alone here — appreciate the words of encouragement :raised_hands:

Yes, I’m coming prepared with my seltzer of choice next time. Thanks Dave!

Mmm sounds good, especially in the fall! Thanks Anna :relaxed:
