I spoke at a meeting the other night to finish off Recovery Month, and the theme of the evening was on choosing life. In active addiction, self-destruction comes naturally to us. We default to so many bad decisions. We feel broken, we make mistakes, and we feel like we are beyond repair. The self hatred alone is enough to feel like we are going to die. All of us know that feeling after a bender- looking in the mirror and asking, “why are you like this?” If this is you, don’t give up.
Find a program, get a sponsor, work the steps. It doesn’t have to continue to be this way. The biggest lie I ever believed was that I was not worth recovery. You ARE worth it. I used to party myself into oblivion. It stopped being fun a long time ago- but I still couldn’t stop. I pray you have a spiritual awakening- and that you break the cycles of addiction- you can and will make it- all it takes is rigorous honesty.
Just for today, I will pursue life harder than I ever pursued death.
Today I, and YOU can choose life… over the self hatred.
We can choose life… over the anger.
We can choose life… over the guilt.
We can choose life… over the shame.
You are worth it.
You can choose recovery.
