Anyone struggle with codependency? What are ways you cope with it or ways to break away from it? Toxic relationships can lead us back to old ways, but changing them to good relationships (if possible) is difficult as well. What are you’re thoughts?
I REALLY struggle with this a lot and something I’ve been working on is valuing and learning to love myself first and focusing all of that energy inward. Codependency is detrimental to one’s health and I just believe that I’m worth more than having those negative feelings. I tell myself “I deserve to feel good because I love myself and no body should have the power to make me feel otherwise” it takes time and patience and healing as I believe our codependency often stems from deep roots. So my advice practice self love “love yourself “ even if it starts small like telling yourself things like “I deserve to love myself” or do something kind for yourself, take care of yourself physically and mentally, it’ll take you a long way. I believe in you friend! All is well
Boundaries are key. Figure out what your personal deal breakers are and stick to them. Your partner needs to do the same. And stick to them! There are probably some tough conversations coming your way as well. You may need to cut ties with some people. It happens to us all when we get sober, but especially for codependent relationships this can be the most difficult. Be strong and stand firm on your convictions! You can do it.
Hi Brandon, two book suggestions: Codependent No More and The Language of Letting Go, but are by Melody Beattie. Codependent No More is more a general overview with action steps for making changes. The Language of Letting Go is a daily reader that provides little daily bits of information to think about.
