Count days?

How many days have you been sober over days not. Say you were always drunk for years. You sober for sober 363 days, relapse couple days continue on yest of year. That's still 363 your sober, out of a year. You still have been sober that many days. Pat on back. Better than 363 days drunk/drugged. Don't start over.

Yes Jeff & Tim you do have the experiences that you experienced, But you don’t have what really counts, continuous sobriety. If you are a real alcoholic like I am you can never successfully drink again. You body has changed, you are no longer a normal drinker without an allergy to alcohol. It’s like a pickle you can’t go back ever to being a cucumber . And, Once you drink again you are listening to your disease and not recovery / Higher Power / Good Orderly Direction. And because this allergy to alcohol has happened in your body unbeknownst to your rational mind, you will drink again without help and to drink is to die. Real alcoholics either get sober and remain or statistically think one drink won’t hurt and end up without AA in jails, institutions or dead. Why play Russian Roulette, don’t drink, go to meetings, read the big book and get a sponsor and have a happy, joyous and free life without alcohol! I am rooting for you both, good luck!!!

So.... let's get this straight if you have a bad day, drink again oh well there moving forward. Never said they tried to be a successful alcoholic . It takes time to get there and stay. Never said I drank again. Saying, don't start over because you had a moment of weakness. If when we lost buddies and said hey let's retreat we failed, where would we be. Bad, emotional moments happen. Sometimes our weakness comes out and our true strength overcomes. A failure let's them start again and try and regain the ground you already got. A set back is just that., temporary, you move forward to achieve your goal. Never backwards. Please read before committing.

I encourage people who had a mishap, don't knock them. Get real. I'm guessing you just stopped, never had a hiccup. God bless you.

Don't listen to that reply. Sorry it's OK to try again. Look up how many alcoholics relapse after rehabe. Will blow your mind.

Between 40% and 60% of addicts will inevitably relapse. This figure, however, does not represent every person who has completed treatment. It is important to understand the high probability of relapse and learn the proper tools to maintain sobriety.

Doesn't say there not a true addict. Good grief.....you've been on here 3 months and given 1 post and no support, what counts is giving support and encouragement. Good for you. Deborah Gooden.

Good morning Jeff,
Thank you for your post. I really needed to hear that. I have started over yet again and am in day 9. Some of the comments on here are ridiculous. Those are people I try and stay away from. Again, thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving :turkey::plate_with_cutlery::maple_leaf:

Deborah I’m 100% with you. Yes slips happen. But in this program you count continuous days. Nobody is picking on anybody if they have a slip but you can’t say you are sober 10 years if you’ve been drunk for 10 out of 20 years. It’s a wonderful life!

I go to AA meetings, have a sponsor, and work the 12 steps. However, I recognize that there are other paths and programs today. Not everyone here follows the same program. This is a recovery app, not an AA app. That being said, when you say “this program”, it’s best to qualify that you mean AA. Regardless, the most important day for all of us is today!

Celebrate every sober day! That being said, there’s a point where you’re going to realize you really can never drink EVER again. Planning for “mistakes” is just another way our brains trick us into relapse. I played that game for a long time “oh, I HAD two years but slipped up” …NOPE I’m starting over and earning it.

The whole days thing is interesting. I mean you milestone everything up to one year. Then it’s just years. How about you don’t drink no more and that’s that. Lapse vs. Relapse. Recovered vs. in recovery. Sober vs. Clean. Semantics! How about we all just help each other in a positive way not to drink no more.
