Craving

What kinds of activities do you do to fill the time that you once killed with alcohol/substances?

I have lots of projects I could start, but I’m having a hard time turning my need for a distraction into the motivation to actually distract myself. Would love to hear how others physically cope or fill their time.

Legos! Yeah I know they aren’t cheap but the money I was blowing on drinks is redirected towards those and they are therapeutic to build and fun to display.

I like going to the gym.

Story time. I have always enjoyed video games. I found myself not playing games because i would drink too much and not remember the story. Thats not an issue now.

Point is. Do an activity or hobby that is basically impossible if you are using. Maybe one you did before the substance abuse.

I just recently learned to crochet! Ive found that when I’m craving it’s good to get out in nature. One day I poured a cup of lemonade and brought it with- for me, other flavored drinks help subdue the cravings

Volunteering at a homeless shelter, theatre, place of worship, AA ...also long walks, bikerides, traveling to a new place with the $ you save...lots to do! You have to actively work on yourself, your emotions, your everything and make a life for yourself so you don't want to drink anymore.

I do the same things I used. I go to the beach, I shoot pool , I am a foodie so of course restaurants like Applebee's that aren't real expensive or all you can eat buffets. I do the same things I used to do I just eliminated the drinking and druging when I do them . I go with people in the program. Or with a family member. Networking is very important you'd be surprised how many people in the program like to go bowling and to the beaches . I also found out that Calvary chapel has a celebrate recovery and they have a lot of events. They Have gatherings at the church with food family friends if they play kickball ,cornhole ect..

Unfortunately I like snacks, especially pickle pops but I also do crosswords and deep clean my house.

You need to do mediation and breathing medication.

Get away from your mind of drinking.

When you feel like drinking close your eyes and talk yourself into meditation... Dream your way out of drinking...
