Cravings & Urges

When I get cravings and urges what are some things I can do to help with that or distract myself ?

Call a sober friend, call a sponsor. Get an ice cream cone. Play the tape all the way to the end. Get to a meeting… do whatever you need to to not pick up.

Eat candy :lollipop:

Meetings, call a friend in Sobriety, puck up a hobby. Just stay busy.

Yeah, sugar can help with the physical urges. Otherwise, I make a deal with myself and give myself permission to drink after I do a certain number of activities or chores. No craving lasts forever, so usually after I walk the dog, do the dishes, and water my plants (or whatever) the craving has passed.

Alternatively, as they say in AA, make sure to talk to three people before you go out.

Try to be around someone who you look up to or find something productive to do or even just take a nap . For me that’s what I try to do just any activity to get my mind off it . Or do something with my daughter if it’s really bad though sometimes I just go lay down try to close my eyes or take my dog fkd a walk . Anything but sit there and think about it

Iced chai or ice cream for the physical cravings! Think about an activity you used to love to do before drinking took over and get back into it. Cross-stitching for me, I’m a dork🤪

Get out of the house. For me it’s fitness, reading, listening to music. Even watching tv!

What if you’ve been using so long you don’t know who you are or what you like to do all you know is the cycle of insanity?

One thing I love to do is know that cravings are confirmation that I am indeed an addict. I am in favor of anti-craving medication like naltrexone as a preventative. Set the timer for 15 min. Feel the craving peak and wash over you and breathe. Let it run its course without calling the dealer. Know that you have the ability to bear this process. Scars are literally 10 times stronger than skin. Everyone who reads this is a warrior. You got this.

I always use my higher power which for me always leads me to prayer.
So for me prayer is not the prayer I grew up with from the church. It’s just me talking in my head to my higher power just like normal conversation …..that’s prayer for me.I found that it has worked every time
As of right now today this very moment, relapse has not been part of my journey

Great list

Great recommendation. We tend to ear more sweets in sobriety to replace substances.

Nailed it.

Meetings and lots of them. Do what is suggested by people that you’d like what they have in sobriety. I ended up with about 130 meetings in 90 days. It kept my mind on sobriety until I learned and could practice AA in all aspects of life. One day at a time. You can do this.

Service work. Hello others and you help yourself get out of your own head.

Anything that keeps ur mind busy is good to do!! They say that if when the cravings come on, if u can distract yourself for 7mins then generally the cravings will fade out. Cravings are like ur stomach growling becuz of hunger. U ignore if for long enought then it will feed itself off ur body fat and same goes for cravings except theres no body fat, they will just stop if u successfully keep ur mind busy. Grab a piece of paper and write down everything that the substance has taken from you and everything it has done to u,all the bad and negative. Then below that write down 2 or 3 people whom u can call immediately to have their support when cravings come.
