It's been emotional. My partner lost a close friend to suicide this week and he has been numbing out a bit which feels (to me) very disconnected from me.
I told him today that my sobriety and his grief are not super compatible and we both cried a lot.
He's been making excuses and using his age (he's 25) as an excuse for lack of coping skills.
When we met we were both drunks. Two years later I'm sober and he's struggling. We're both struggling. But I'm not going to let that take away my sobriety. I've finally prioritized myself. It took a while and I'm not letting it go. No matter what the cost.
Hugs. Sorry to read about your partner losing his friend to suicide. So tough. On so many levels.
I know what it is like to lose a relationship in part due to alcohol. In my last relationship, one of the reasons I stopped drinking was because I did not want to lose my partner at the time.
By the time I relapsed two years later, our relationship was pretty much over.
I realized during my two years sober, we are not meant to be together. I do regret drinking during the last year with him.
Some people are not meant to be in our lives as part of our sobriety. It can feel very painful, this realization. I hope that both of you find peace, Amy.
Thank you for your kind words.
Powerful stuff. You are putting yourself and your sobriety first. I find inspiration in your strength. Thank you for sharing!
