Last year on this day my two worlds finally collided, and my addict life was finally exposed to all of my family and loved ones. I had been living a double life of untreated addiction for years. While it was unbelievably painful to finally face reality, today I’m grateful that it’s finally over. I was barely surviving, and just living for those moments when I could “escape” reality. I’m grateful today to know that I have a choice. I’m grateful for the continued support of my family who had to bear the brunt of my insanity. I’m grateful to a man named Peter, who I met at an AA meeting one year ago tomorrow. I’m grateful to another guy from AA named Moises, who called me everyday the first few weeks and introduced me to some good meetings and friends. I’m grateful that I have a home group that has loved me and accepted me when I hated myself. I’m grateful to my sponsor, who has taken time out of his busy schedule to help me work the 12 steps. I’m grateful for my many friends here on Loosid that have introduced me to so many new tools that help me in my recovery. I’m grateful to the powers that be that have given me another chance, that have opened my mind so that I can work the 12 steps like never before. I’m grateful for everything at this moment. I could on and on…My thoughts and prayers go out to all those that are sick and suffering from this disease. I pray that they can experience the freedom of choice that I have today. I don’t feel like this every day. I still struggle at times. Life still goes on. The difference is I’m working a daily program of recovery that relieves me of my insanity, rather than reach for an unhealthy substance or a behavior.
